I shot the neighborhood K9 this morning... Cautionary PIC inside.

I don't get the issue. Felons can't buy guns but they still get them. So that tells me that guns are available.
It was the coyote's choice to bring canine teeth to a gun fight. He could have gotten a gun but he chose not to. Bad choice.

They're pretty smart, but there's the whole opposable thumb issue.

Coyotes are hella smart. That doesn't mean they're invincible.

30-odd years ago, I made a nice bit of extra case every winter killing coyotes for the bounty. IIRC, Washington state used to pay $25/hide. It was pretty easy to make a couple hundred extra $$ every week. Made a good, legal supplement to my unemployment benefits.
I lived in farm country and had agreements with several of the local farmers to allow me access to their land.

So the animal is guilty of following his natural instincts for survival...
I guess that's a good enough reason to kill in hick town.

Humans rule the planet, get used to it. If you think it should be different, allow yourself to be eaten by a coyote or wolf the next time you encounter one.

What's the biggest problem with hunting them - smell, sound, or something else? I imagine they can smell a human from a very long distance, depending on wind.

Smell for sure, but they also have very sharp eyes. In addition to shooting them, I got many by trapping them.
"Wiley Coyote" is accurate as hell. They're very smart, wily animals.
We have lots of them around here. I can hear them howling and yipping at night. The local farmers all have problems with coyotes. No bounty on them here though...and I'm too busted up to hunt and trap anymore.

I have wondered if it's possible to raise one from a puppy as a pet. They do seem to be somewhat intelligent. I've known you can get wolf mixes.
I watched a fascinating program on dogs and man the other day. The short answer is no, you will probably fail with a randomly selected wild dog pup.
The interesting thing is, pick a friendly one, and do that with successive litters and you end up with a domesticated 'dog' in just a few generations.
The Russians did this huge study using silver foxes, and the foxes even changed colors as they became more tame.

Don't you eat what ever you killed?

do you eat mice you catch in mouse traps? do you eat flies and other insects you kill?

Coyotes are considered pests just like those other things, especially on farms and such.

I would be more impressed if he made the kill with his bare hands. Shooting a animal from 50+ yards away is so pussy. The coyote didn't get any advantage like that.

if you use a mouse trap/poison to kill mice then you're a pussy for not using your bare hands.

We seem to have them roaming around where my mom lives. Sadly due to complications I can't go and try to get rid of them (would be better to have a rifle too). We never had too much a problem with wildlife when cattle, etc were in the pastures but now that they are empty god knows what is down there. Starting to create a problem though.

You're so manly. I can somewhat understand you shooting it cause it was killing your neighbors chickens by why you posing by it like it's something special? You proud of yourself? Man you're so pathetic. Really sounds like a chicken sh@t excuse to kill something. "Yeah I heard a chicken got killed so I killed the nearest wild animal I seen. Yuk yuk.."

My instinct is to punch you in the face. That means you won't press charges right?
