"simplifying the process"

This is why I like this idea. Plus You'll probably get experimental and try thing you may not normally. Tried BÁNH MÌ for the first time using Blue Apron and I thought it was awesome

$11 per meal may be expensive for some but buying fresh, whole foods can be expensive. I buy organic chicken and it's around $11/lb where as the regular brand chicken is $2 - $3 /lb. Fresh fruits and veggies can also be expensive and if you want to buy more wholesome snacks, that is pricey as well.

You're getting raped. Organic chicken at CostCo is only $5-6 a pound.

That seems like a poor analogy. I think a more apt book comparison would be if you belonged to a "book of the month" club that sends you books automatically based on your preferences, instead of you spending the time to research new books and order/borrow them yourself.

Yes, you're right but, only if they're short stories.

I signed up for Hello Fresh (www.hellofresh.com).

I'll start by saying that I know it's really expensive: $69 a week for 3 meals for 2 people. Yeah, that's 11 bucks a meal. Like I said, really expensive.

I want to get back into cooking and I'm hoping that simplifying this part of the process will make it easier for me to ease back into it. Once cooking becomes a regular part of my routine, I'll probably start buying groceries locally.

You may now criticize me.

Wonder if they are the same -

Wow, that's pretty cool. It's not that expensive, at least compared to any healthy-eating diet. I did raw vegan for fun for awhile, that was over $30 a day at times, not to mention my bodybuilding stuff, which was 6 meals a day made up of lots of protein & fresh veggies (muscles are expensive!! haha).

I think it's a good idea. I like the concept of Blue Apron etc., I just happen to be allergic to everything so I'm forced to shop for myself. If I could have easy-prep food delivered, I'd totally do it haha. Let us know how it works out!

Yes! This is another motivator. I'm excited about trying recipes I never would have tried before.

So I got my first delivery a week ago. I'm really pleased.

I'm on the 3 meals for 2 people plan for $69. I'm getting enough food for 3 people out of each meal. It's way too much food for two people. So it's really 9 meals total, which brings the price down to $7.67 a meal/person.

The ingredients are good quality and somewhat pre-prepped (e.g. everything is washed, garlic is peeled, etc).

If anybody is curious. I apparently have 3 free boxes to give away. I think it's just a promo code to take discount the entire price of the first box, so you'd have to signup for the subscription, but you could cancel after the first delivery. If you're interested, PM me your first name and email.

They ship all the ingredients individually in ziplock bags and say you can just not include anything you're allergic to.

Would be worth it if it was pre made meals otherwise, why not just go get what you need at the grocery store if you know how to make it?

My biggest issue with cooking is every time I decide to look at a recipe I don't know what half of the stuff even is and just give up and order something or make a prepared meal instead. I really do need to get more into cooking, but it's just so time consuming to learn and I just don't have the will power.

None of the major chains will deliver around here, maybe in a large city like NY a neighborhood grocer might offer this service but I checked Publix and Winn-Dixie and neither deliver food.

Or you could just, you know, go to the grocery store. Take the 50 bucks you saved and spend it on a car service.

Update:

I just cancelled my HelloFresh subscription and signed up with Plated instead. HelloFresh has had problems with 2 out 6 deliveries.

One of the deliveries got destroyed in shipment. Maybe not their fault, but they don't give their customers tracking information so I had no way to tell what happened. It took a few days to get a response from customer service to figure out what happened.

The second problematic delivery was shipped incorrectly and took 3 days to arrive, which meant it wasn't cooled anymore. Their customer service wouldn't refund me 100% of the order.

Hopefully Plated will be better. I've heard really good things about them from many friends that use it.

HelloFresh kind of sucks anyway. Plated has much higher quality ingredients and recipes for things you actually want to eat.

I used HelloFresh and they didn't cancel my order properly so I got a refund through PayPal.

The quality of the ingredients was awesome on my first two deliveries. The more recent ones have been mediocre, not sure what changed.

To those of you that used blue apron, does the product really take >24 hours to transport???! Do they just load up the cooler with 10 pounds of dry ice or what?

Blue Apron uses Nordic Ice ice packs to cool the contents. Not sure how long shipping takes but everything is always well chilled when received.

We've been doing Blue Apron for a few months. The change of pace has been nice and once in a while there's a recipe that is really good to add to the standard repertoire. They do tend to include a somewhat rare ingredient in at least one meal. There also is the convenience factor.

It is starting to get old though. There are ingredients they tend to use too much - like radishes, red onions, lemon/lime zest, or pea tips; not to mention their proteins. It's starting to get a bit boring. If they don't start including some more diversity we are going to cancel.

Chef'd looks ok but I already cook dishes close to what they are doing. I would like to find a place that throws kidney, liver, sweetbreads, along with unique/foraged herbs/starches into the mix.
