Should have sold that kind of thing in FS/FT. Can't trust that an eBay buyer knows what they're doing.

Even FS/FT isn't worth it anymore. Last time I tried to sale something the first guy who contacted me insisted that he wasn't paying until he received the item unless I provided heatware or other "references." Fuck off, you don't get my info from other sites. The second guy paid with Paypal and then tried to get me to ship to an address not on his profile (meaning there's not even a shred of seller protection).

The only online sales I bother with anymore are places that mostly involve FTF meetups or smaller local forums that usually have their own feedback system to rate buyers and sellers.

I haven't sold anything on the FS/FT in years but Heatware was always a big factor.

It used to be huge. Now its not as much of a consideration for me. I look at someone's join date and if they post in more than just FS/FT. If its just FS/FT, I want some reference material. If its someone that posts on a regular basis in other forums, I don't worry about it. Hell the last thing I bought on FS/FT was from a guy I argue with all the time in OT. Sale was smooth as silk. The time before that it was from one of my favorite members who just happened to be selling the RAM I needed.

I add stuff to heatware when the other person asks me to but otherwise I don't even think about it.

I used to do it a lot when I was in high school and college because it was a decent savings.
Now that I am older with a good job, I just buy everything new and avoid all the hassles.

Wait, what?

Not sure if you are questioning his demands or my response. I don't use heatware. I'm not linking you (the buyer) to my profiles on other sites, because that's none of your damned business.

FYI: The buy has filed a dispute and there is a hold on my PayPal funds for the amount ofor the purchase.
So yes he is asking for a refund.

Been thinking about this more and gut is telling me that he probably pushed an overclock a bit too far. From what I recall that board is known to OC like beast (which is probably why it sold for so much) and it even came to me with a rather high over clock which seemed to run very well and the temps were excellent under full load. But I reset the bios to default settings prior to shipping.

Not sure where the ceiling could have been on that OC but it seemed like it had plenty of head room.

I wish a competitor to Ebay would exist. Back in the early 00's Yahoo had auctions and those flopped. Now the only competitors to Ebay are non-direct like Craigslist, Swappa, Here or Amazon.

Someone needs to come up with a good online auction site (not that beezid crap) and put some heat on Ebay.

You have to wonder, though: If eBay is moving further and further away from auctions, then why would anyone else want to get into the online auction business? Even if they could somehow wrestle the bulk of the auction traffic away from eBay, it's obviously not the most profitable business to be had. And if they were to operate like eBay does now and brought in traditional sellers with mostly BIN listings, then there would be little reason for buyers to visit, just as there's little reason any more for buyers to visit eBay.

Someone doesn't sell on Ebay anymore. Now, as soon as someone simply "files" the refund request, they remove the money from your account pending the review. And yes, paypal went to 6 months return period if item not as advertised. Seems like an awfully long time for something to get used and abused - especially electronics, etc.

Wow, didn't know that bit, 6 friggin months?, that's more than a lot of MOBO manufacturers give when bought new!.

I have stopped selling on ebay. Ebay and Paypal always favor the buyer. I had a buyer break an exhaust manifold during install, ADMIT IT, request a refund and Ebay agreed with him. Their response to me that this is part of the risk sellers take, the cost of doing business. Well I am not a business, so they can go to hell.

Yep. This is why I no longer use eBay for selling. I got burned on $300 of stuff from a scammy buyer.

I'd try and troubleshoot with the guy a bit. If he fried his proc he should be getting beep codes of some type on boot unless the board has diagnostic leds or a digital display right? Very rarely have I seen a motherboard fail. Even with a shit power supply. They've got caps and power conditioning built right on them to turn shit power into useable voltage. Who knows maybe he doesn't have all the leads hooked up to the board. Ask for a pic of how he's got it hooked up. If you spend ten minutes you might save the sale instead of getting your motherboard back and being out the fees.

All of this crap is exactly why I don't use Paypal anymore and won't use Ebay ever.

Every once in a while I still buy through eBay. This winter I went looking for an evaporative humidifier that I used to own, but is no longer manufactured. My old one stopped working a couple years ago, but I really liked it. Got on eBay, found someone selling a used one, and it's been going strong ever since. PayPal has never given me issues. It's still a damned handy way to instantly exchange money between private parties.

Did you pay for insurance?
Unfortunately no. My general rule as a seller is to insure all items over $100, but I honestly didn't expect this auction to sell for as much as it did and hence I just didn't think about it. However I didn't hear any reports of damaged packaging and from what I understand the process of filing claims through USPS/UPS/FedEx insurance is a hassle unto itself and so this is most likely a moot issue.

I'd try and troubleshoot with the guy a bit. If he fried his proc he should be getting beep codes of some type on boot unless the board has diagnostic leds or a digital display right? I plan on giving him my number when he responds. I would like more details in regards to this because I just can't see why that mobo would just up and quit working.

I did some research in regards to similar situations and from what I can see the odds really aren't in my favor though there have been a few surprises. I have even seen some cases where the seller was able to prove with photos that buyer had damaged the item and ebay still ruled in the buyer's favor. But there have been a couple of cases when the buyer is trying to claim a defect well outside the seller's return window and eBay sided with seller citing "buyer's remorse"

I guess I should consider myself fortunate that I've been buying and selling on eBay for so long without running into any serious trouble, but damn; I know that if I had spent over $100 on an item the first thing I would do is test it out and make sure it works and I would notify the seller at the FIRST SIGN of trouble instead of waiting 2 weeks after the refund date to get the ball rolling.

And obviously there is no way to prove that this guy OC'd this board too far unless there's burn mark somewhere. Damage on electronics often leaves no visible trace.

I'm in a slightly better mood now so maybe I won't be a complete asshole about this but I'm still not happy.

2 weeks after the refund date. That's ridiculous.
You can try to refuse it..
Not sure how well that would go.
or issue refund and film yourself opening the return box.

Update buyer finally responded.

Mar 05:
The buyer (qualitydesires) requested a return (5006773847)

Reason for return:
It's defective or doesn't work

Buyer:

After ordering all components for desktop, we cannot get this motherboard to post. Replaced other components to try to figure out if some other component wasn t working however, it still didn t post. Items are in same condition as received. Spent a lot of time on this. Please help us resolve.

Me:

Are you implying that the board doesn't power on at all? Or does it boot up to a certain point? My apologies, but I ran this board for several days prior to selling. Mainly because I had debated keeping it for myself. Have you tried looking up the user manual or resetting the CMOS settings? Another thing is that if you are using a different CP than what I shipped it with, you may have to flash to the latest BIOS for the board to see it. My return policy is 14 days. We have now doubled that. Unfortunately I cannot refund this item.

Buyer:

Am trying to use an PNY 4GB 1333MHz memory stick. What memory did you use? Why is motherboard still on rev. 1.0 if you had it working? Hope we can get this working. Please let us know.

Me:

I personally didn't update the BIOS because there was no need to. Here is the RAM that I was using in the board http: www.ebay.com/itm/251811853949?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1559.l2649 This is the official supported memory list. http: download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_ga-x58a-ud3r.pdf Now have you tried different RAM slots? And are there any beep codes. I'd like to get a clearer idea of what the exact problem is so I'll give you my number and you can call me tomorrow after 6pm. XXX-XXX-XXXX Thank you.

I know it is rare to have issues with specific brands of RAM, but in my personal experience I have noticed that higher end mobos tend to be alot pickier with what RAM you can use.

You keep talking about your return period. As if you are allowed to make your own rules on Ebay.

Hopefully he gets it going, or he will be getting a refund.
