I'm still hoping that my mom ends up liking it as she's still in the dinosaur era with her old flip phone. Frankly, I bet that once I tell her that she can easily take photos of her cats and quickly post them to Facebook, I bet she'll warm up to the device rather quickly.... and become one of those weird people that takes photos with their tablets.

It always felt strange to see people taking photos or recording video with a giant tablet. However, the few times I've done it with the iPad mini, it just felt right. The pictures and video are surprisingly good. The 7.9" screen doesn't feel like a viewfinder at all. It feels like I'm actually looking at the subject (in my case, a playful puppy).

I've had my Mini for a few weeks now. I love it! Right now I'm streaming this weeks TWiT episode from the Mini via air play to my AppleTV and watching on my flat screen TV. The form and function of the Mini is right on the money. I just don't have anything bad to say about it.

That's what I need to complete this ecosystem: An Apple TV. I'm just worried it will be updated right after I buy it.

Just look at it this way, the AppleTV is only $99. So, if it happens to get updated, you're not really out of much money at all. ...or you could be lucky like us ATV2 owners and have a device that's actually worth more than what you paid for it. :awe:

EDIT:

Oh, and there's other software that supports AirPlay if you have a HTPC. XBMC is an example.

About 10-11 months? I only wonder if it will have an A6-based processor like the iPhone 5 has, or a new generation. Currently has A5.

Well the existing iPad mini is running the A4, like the iPad 2, so they may only bump it to an A5.

The real question is retina. The iPad biggie got bigger and heavier and the battery had to get a LOT larger to accommodate the retina display. Now, IGZO is a possibility, and there are some that are using it at that PPI... but we'll see.

iPad mini and iPad 2 are A5.

On the former, you can also get the ATV 3 for $85 via Apple Refurb (get 5% back via ShopDiscover).

On the latter, I'm hoping to try Airplay via XBMC on a Raspberry Pi. I assume Airplay video will work, but Airplay Mirroring won't.

Not following you. The value of ATV2 increased somehow? Because it can be jailbroken?

Does iPad Mini have light bleeding and uneven white issues like the iPad 2 and 3's? What is your experience?

thanks

Exactly. See what they are going for on ebay or similar sites. The ATV2 is a fairly desired product. The ATV3 not so much, at least until a JB is available.

My HP TouchPad has uneven backlight and bleeding around the edges. My iPad mini is perfect. Both are IPS displays, but the iPad mini is far better-looking.

My mother absolutely adores her iPad mini Her wrists are weak so the super lightweight of it is perfect and coming from an HP Touchpad the pixel density is improved.

Being an iPad 3 user though... all I see is pixels But then that's why I bought the thing and not a cheaper Android tablet (was well before Nexus 10, I tried a Nexus 7 and wasn't interested in the Infinity Prime one).

Can a hacked ATV2 overcome the 720p limitation?

Honestly I am not sure of that. I am guessing the 720p limitation is hardware related but perhaps I am wrong. I believe the real reason people are jailbreaking the ATV2 is for better content support without the need of conversion as well as the ability to run diferent media servers. I think most people are running XBMC on the jailbroken devices which is quite a bit more feature filled than the default Apple interface.

Correct, you jailbreak it to get XBMC. It is still limited to 720p. The aTV3 is, aside from not being jailbroken, more powerful, and better.

Yeah, but that little part "not being jailbroken" makes it an inferior device by far IMO. I would say the same for any iOS device.

The iPhone 5 is inferior to the iPhone 4s then?

I tried jailbreaking, didn't have a great experience, and don't have a huge impetus to do it again, so I am not your demo.

For me, yes. I would not consider upgrading to an iPhone 5 without a jailbreak available. The hardware in the 5 is superior but in the end the software makes the device. Like I said that is just my opinion and more than likely full of crap, but there it is

Maybe it's cause I don't have a tablet, nor anything really touchscreen in general, but I had to chuckle a little there. :sneaky:
