No, the people down here start dropping off when it gets in the single digits. No deaths down here YET because it is 12 degrees out, but lets just wait and see.

Oh, I should note that not ALL schools in the Atlanta Metro area are closed today. Gwinnett county schools (some of the better performing schools in GA) are open today and were open yesterday.

Then lawmakers are saying they need to raise property taxes to buy school busses snow tires. Then the news media starts saying we need salt trucks and snow plows. It is just cheaper in the long run to shut stuff down for 2-3 days a year when the weather is like this.

back in the day, in nyc, the schools didn't shut down unless there was at least 6 inches of snow on the ground, even nowadays, they'll just delay opening and wont actually shut down all the schools...but the private schools shut down if the news even mentions the possibility of snow...

Columbus, OH schools need a lot of snow too to close down, but the reason the reason private schools close earlier is because some of their students have to drive extreme distances. People drive pretty much 60 miles from any direction to get to my old school. Usually those people lived in the middile of no where where they don't get snow plows.

I remember going to HS in -10 degrees F. I also remember going to school when every road I took had at least 1 inch of packed snow on it. I just had to drive slower, AND I had to pick up some friends too. Heck, it was -5 yesterday morning and not a single school around here even thought about closing. I can only remember 2 times when HS was canceled. Once was because it was -20 out w/o windchill. The second was because the superintendant and his big 4WD truck couldn't make it in because of too much snow. That's basically how it is here. Only this year we have had NO snow here in SouthEastern Wisconsin but the temps have been incredibly cold. It should be the other way around!!!

I will admit that each area of the country is setup to deal with the weather that it normally gets.

When I moved up to NY, I was shocked to see the lack of Air Conditioners up here. There is pretty much no such thing as central AC which is basically required for anyone living south of Maryland (where I grew up). Instead, everyone relies on window AC units, which are so effective. So when the temps do get in the 90's and the humidity gets up there, people here just are unable to properly deal with it.

Same thing for the south. Places like NC, SC, and Georgia don't get snow that much or bitterly cold weather. Now granted, less than an inch of snow should not be a reason to shut everything down and cause accidents. But not much you can do about it.

Most Fulton County schools are open too, just delayed. So it wasn't enough that my wife got the day off yesterday, but she got to sleep in today too.

You know, it is the south. Cold weather can cause more problems than just ice on the roads. Maybe the heat was out in a lot of the schools. Maybe the heat was inadequate for the temperatures there. Maybe they didn't want kids standing out on the street corners waiting for the bus in inadequate clothing. Maybe the water pipes froze. It's not just a "wahh it's cold" thing.

No, it is just a "waaaaah, it's cold" thing. We stood out waiting for the bus in this kind of weather or worse all the damn time growing up in Michigan. It's just not that big a deal; put a coat, scarf, hat, and gloves on the kid and send him/her on their way.

Exactly. Everybody who lives here seems to agree that the people are pussies and wet their pants when it gets cold out.

Well, I live in Tennessee right now, formerly in Alabama. We have a school closed here right now because the heat is out, and another closed because the pipes are frozen up. They didn't close the whole system down, but some of these older schools just can't deal with 7 degree weather. Heck--we have no water in my house right now because my pipes are frozen up because they don't build for weather like this down here. It's not about whining and who is strong/weak/whatever.

I think you people are being pretty harsh. I live in Auckland, New Zealand and our afternoon temps never get below about 9 degrees (50F) even on the coldest winters day. Perhaps in the mornings it may get down to 40F. I remember once going up a mountain here in NZ and having a really tough time with the cold, and this was in summer! Humans are amazing in that we adapt to our conditions, so what's "not cold" to you may be freezing to someone else.

Remember that it also works the other way around. Someone from a place like Iceland would get killed on a hot day in Atlanta. Whereas many natives would just put on a fan. It's not the heat. It's the humidity.

Or send them to Arizona in July with the 120 degree weather. Its not the heat, oh wait it is. You need to stay hydrated then.

I remember being shocked by that too when we visited relatives in Colorado, Montana and New York. There air conditioning was considered an option, whereas if you don't have it here in Alabama . . . . well it was nice knowing you. I always assumed everybody would have it up there, especially in NY, since you'd always hear on the national news reports how such and such many people died or were suffering from the current heat 'wave.' However, a heat wave in those areas of the country will actually let up after a few days while many summers in the South we'll go well over a month without any signifanct relief from unrelenting heat. Thankfully, the last couple summers haven't been too bad. I like the warm weather here, but the heat and humidity can really get to you at times and there's not much you can do about it when outdoors. At least for the cold you can always put on enough clothing to stay relatively warm (within reason anyway.) When it's upper 90s and 90% humidity you can only take off so much clothing before you're arrested.

If pretty much all of Atlanta's schools shut down that's making me feel a little better about Birmingham. There were a few school closings to the north of Birmingham where there was actually a bit of snow on the ground, but most of the major school systems here are open. We usually do the same freakout dance though any time there's a chance for snow as people just don't really know how to deal with it down here.

A 'patch' of ice? Sounds like you guys are a bunch of panzies. We have 3 feet of snow on the ground with black ice underneath and I can't remember the last time I heard the news say they were closing schools.

You did this in Michigan. In Texas we rode home from school in 120°F buses. People in different areas can handle different conditions. You're insane or stupid if you hold Georgians up to the same standards. Most of those kids probably don't even have warm enough clothes for that kind of weather. I know I don't.

People down here own coats and hats. It gets down to the teens and 20s every year.

Exactly. It's not like people down here have radically different physiology from our counterparts back in Michigan. You just learn to dress for the weather. It's common sense.

This is why the south lost the war of northern aggression. It got cold, everyone went home and stayed inside. No Gen. Lee crossing the chattahocee river. Then sherman came down to warm them up. Okay, that last one wasn't nice.

I wondered why the kids were still standing in my driveway at 9 this morning waiting for the bus . They're usually gone by 8:30.

I also grew up in Michigan and school rarely closed unless there was a boatload of snow. I went to college in the Upper Peninsula (Northern Michigan, right on Lake Superior) and in the five years I was there classes were cancelled twice. Not for snow, but because the wind chill hit -60°F.

Yeah, Atlantans always over-hype the cold weather conditions. My thermometer says it's 23.5F outside at the moment, but it's clear as a bell. It is also the coldest it's been here since 1996, so I've heard. While many public schools do close, my high school, Woodward Academy, and my college, Georgia Tech, hardly ever closed when everyone else did. I think Tech closed for half of one day while I was there, and that was during 9/11.

Granted, this made my drive to work much easier cause I don't have to fight traffic with all the parents shuttling their kids to school but still. God forbid children in the area get a little cold stepping out the door to go to school.

I agree. I said the same thing earlier in this thread. They contrive news and then blow the story that they have created out of proportion.

That's very true. People get inundated with WINTER STORM WATCH 2003!!! headlines every 5 minutes and gradually come to believe that it is indeed the end of the world via sheer repetition.

Incredible, have to laugh otherwise it is so sad.

Only way to stop would be if the advertisers revolted saying our customers are complaining about the nonsense you put on the air. Stop the crap or we'll pull the ad money.

They could put the Ad money into the Internet but not Pop up ads.
