I still dont get it somewhat, because China has a lot to gain by slowly gaining influence and strength through soft power over time like they have been doing, and they also have quite a lot to lose by pushing open conflict, even if there is much to be gained. What they can gain through war, they can also gain through soft power, or at least they still have quite a lot of stuff to keep gaining through soft power, thus making them more powerful whenever any potential open war could break out. This transition from soft power competition to more hostile competition happened with the transition from Hu Jintao to Xi Jinping.
