I rented out my house for a while - we had bought it because it was an incredible deal (1+ acre lakefront, 1500sf, $135K) but were living in my wife's grandparents' house at the time. This couple was late 50s/early 60s, college educated, and successful business owners and needed a house for a few months while they built their retirement house around the corner.

They called it "Home Dep Pot". At first I thought it was like a pet name (like Home Despot) but that's actually how they thought it was pronounced. I never corrected them but was shocked they had lived in the Atlanta area for 30+ years and had never let the correct pronunciation sink in.

Two personal Home Depot stories:

1) Many years ago I was young and stupid and remodeling our kitchen myself. I ordered the (custom made) countertops from HD. When cutting out the sink hole I put the old countertop upside down on new one in order to more accurately trace the opening. This resulting in me cutting the hole in the wrong spot (basically a mirror image of what I should have done). I swallowed what little pride I had left and went back to HD to order a new one. While the associate was writing up the order I told him what I had done-mostly to point out the stupid things we do sometimes. He looked at me and said this time around they would sell me the replacement at cost-even after I explained it was my stupidity, HD did nothing wrong. HD earned me as a customer for life then.


Story #2: A family member who hasn't worked in decades needed a job and HD was the only one who would hire her. They gave her tons of training and lots of hand-holding. They treat their employers much better than the usual minimum wage/big box store.

Yes, the Solar City sales people are occasionally at my local HD but telling them I'm not interested takes maybe three seconds. OP's rant says a whole lot more about OP's lack of social skills than being a legitimate gripe about "Home Despot."
