I think Home Despot has surpassed Wal-Mart as my least favorite place to shop.

I used to dislike them for the lack of help that was available, but now it seems that every aisle is capped with someone trying to give you a quote on solar, or whatever else they may accost you for. Worse than the damn Jehovah's Witnesses.

Depends on individual location. They are better than Lowes for help in some towns here but vice versa in other towns.

Anyway, what's the big deal in simply saying "no thanks"? They're not that bad. Friggin heating oil and cable companies ringing your bell asking repeated questions - now they're bad.

our home depot is a fucking ghost town in terms of employees.

but if you can locate a group of them they get spooked and run off in different directions like centipedes.

Mine has one of those sweet motion activated video sales pitches in the plumbing section so when you're heading up and down the aisle to put together the collection of fittings and valves you need it's constantly barking at you about the amazing things that you can do and how Home Depot can help.

I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town that installed solar roadways

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started a marketing campaign for solar roadways in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'

The secret to Home Depot: Shop online and pick up in store. No wandering aisles looking for un-findable parts that don't neatly fit into an obvious category, no out-of-stocks and no need to either search for an employee to get help or fight off the salespeople you don't want to bother you.

Plus my local store has 2 spaces right up front for picking up online orders and they give you a free bottle of water.

Mine is the opposite - I generally know exactly what I need and I get accosted by 15 people "How may I help you?" before I get there. I appreciate the service but it gets annoying.

However, what sucks about my Home Depot is that about 75% of the time, I get to where I need to be and they are completely out of what I need. So I end up having to drive 15 miles down the road to the other "nearby" Home Depot or Lowe's.

Way better than Menards though.

Must depend on the location. Most of the HD stores went out of business around here so we just have Lowes and Menard's. Shopping at Menard's is about 1000x better of an experience than Lowes.

My personal least favorite place to shop is Best Buy. It is a guarantee that you will get accosted by Direct TV and Samsung bitches within five minutes of entering the store.

We have a couple Menards by me and I dislike all of them. Only time I ever go there is for very specific things on sale. Any time I've gone there to find various parts for something that broke I've been frustrated. I hate the layout of every store I've been to and can't find anything, and they seem to exclusively employ high school - early college kids who can't help me with even finding stuff... let alone tips for my repair. If I have something I actually have to fix, I go to Lowes or HD.

None of the stores near me have people trying to sell me stuff though.

You guys DO know that you can simply ignore those people, right?
If they keep talking, simple shake your head and point to your ear.
If they are really persistent, fake some sign language.

Keep walking. Don't even reply. I have to do that every week at my grocery store - there is some dude trying to sell their home-electric service. They aren't even worthy of a reply.

My wife wants to put a sign on our door that says unless you are selling girl scout cookies go the fuck away heh.

I'll be honest, I have no qualms with Home Depot. Sometimes finding help can be a bit rough (I mean, as in they aren't hanging around the area, I have to go look or go to a help desk) - but the fact that there isn't a "People of Walmart" or lines that are 20 carts long I have no problems there. They have AWESOME self-checkouts that are VERY easy and always open because everyone else is too scared to use them.

I don't ignore them anymore, I simply look them in the eye and say "Fuck off". It just gets tiring going through the same thing anytime I want to go into Best Buy (or Sam's Club actually. They have those Direct TV people in there too).

Won't help. They don't have an internal vendor's database of "people who we don't talk to" duct-taped to their eyelids.

But congratulations on making the world a slightly shittier place for people who are just doing their jobs.

I love Home Despot (I thought I was the only one who called it that btw).

Except for me, they're always trying to push water testing in our store so they can get someone in the door to pitch a water filtration system.

It's probably because a lot of neighborhoods and such have "no solicitors" rules in place. You used to get more door-to-door type sales growing up. In reality, people are just becoming more and more socially inept, so having to do something like... "talk to a stranger" scares the living shit out of people.

For people like myself, I simply don't have the fucking time anymore in life. No, I don't have 5 minutes to hear your speal about something you are trying to say I'm incredibly misinformed about, nor do I care. You just want money in your pocket, we both know this. Time is money, unless you have a sign that I can read walking by that advertises something I have (and use) that is significantly lower priced than what I currently have - then I don't want to hear it.

You are right. I should be compassionate. Maybe I will also stop requesting to be put on do not call lists or removing myself from spam as well. Electronic spam versus human spam. Not much difference. Just people doing their jobs.

Positive experiences at my home depot. I shop pretty regularly now that I purchased a fixer upper. No sales pitches, a great return policyand I get help when I need it.

I guess now that i think about it, I had a lady who was the "plumbing expert" try to admonish me for doing my own work on a natural gas pipe. Needed to get pipe tape and the first question she asked me was if I was a plumber or not. I said no and she starts into a lecture about how I shouldnt be working on my own gas pipe, you should really call a licensed plumber, its dangerous blah blah blah. I asked her to just tell me where the tape was as Im not calling a plumber to connect a gas kitchen range; a 10 minute job! A simple caution message I would have appreciated but the lecture pissed me off. Almost like she didnt want to make the sale...

Other than that, HD has treated me fine. So has Lowes.

Also, there really isnt an equivalent "people-of-walmart" site for home depot. I really have never left home depot horrified at the quality or clothing choices of their shoppers...

Or you could do the middle-path thing. Be polite enough to maintain a certain level of respect and decorum for a fellow human being (being a dick just make you look bad, anyway), but still saying "no thank you" and continuing to walk to the widgets section you're looking for. If they want to be a merciless prick and chase after you, fine, but make THEM brake the rules. Then you can get them fired.

Also, "Home Cheapos." But anyway.

Actually, for the most part I agree with you. But it is the shitty way they go about it that makes me not care if I am being a dick. If it went like this, everything would be cool:

Cue scene : Me looking at the wall of TV's. I notice someone standing beside me.

Direct TV Man: "Excuse me, I am from Direct TV and was wondering if you would like to hear about our service. Maybe we can save you some money"

Me: "No thank you. I'm not interested today"

That is how I would respond.

However, this is how is actually works:

Direct TV Man : "I see you are looking at TVs today"
Me : "Yes I am"
Direct TV Man : "Well, let me tell you about some specials we have going on right now "
Me : "OK"
Direct TV Man (Starts going on about Direct TV)
Me : "Fuck Off"

I don't need to be suckered into a sales pitch. If they are straight with me, I am straight with them. If they want to dick around, I ain't got time for that.
