Agreed, I'd be surprised if they didn't make higher margin off of "certified" used vehicles than new. I should add that I don't buy from dealers either as a rule of thumb. I've bought two cars from used car lots and the prices were very fair / comparable to private party prices, everything else has been a private party purchase and I go through cars every couple of years

Well, I bought my car 'certified' and the extra warranty has helped. My car is out of the original factory warranty, but is still covered as CPO until the end of the year. They didn't have time to diagnosis my car last night (they were closing as I dropped it off and picked up my loaner). But one of the tech's came out and started it up and as the car started shaking badly, he muttered "oh, that's not good. wow".

I was then told they might have the car for a week or two. If my car was out of warranty, I'd be going without a car for two weeks probably, and having to rent one, not to mention paying for the repairs. the CPO only cost me about $3,500 more than a used one off the street.

But instead of paying for all of that, I still enjoy the benefits of the warranty. My loaner is a brand new 330ci.. well it has 1,400 miles on it.

I talked to my salesman last night and showed him the two orders. He actually seems like an honest guy, and he seemed noticably disturbed when I showed him the sales order we negotiated, and then the one that was put through. He was out sick the day I picked up the car, and one of the other salesman put in the order. He took them over to one of the other salesman and I heard him say "he fuckin put in a different sales order than the one I drew up for my customer. wtf???"

He then told me that since it was almost 3 years ago, he wasn't so sure what he could do for me in terms of returning the difference as cash. He's going to ask. He asked if I would instead take a coupon for $1,000 off my next car since, from an accounting stand point, would be a lot easier for him to leverage and get an ok for.

So i don't know.. I'm planning on trading my car in towards the end of summer, and was probably going to get a newer version of my car.

1000$ for a 600$ mistake? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I'd take it, especially if you had already planned on using this dealership in the future.

I like to the OP $600 is nothing. Yet I CLEARLY remember a thread, not too long ago, where the OP was close to going to a loan shark for a couple hundred bucks.

He is so full of shit its coming out his ears.

Um $600 to me isn't "nothing". It's a weeks pay. It's my car payment. It's a lot of food. Hell, it's damn near the cost of going on a budget cruise. If it was 'nothing' I would have not even said anything about it because "fighting for it" wouldn't have been worth my time. I'm not sure how you even get that I think that way.

And, about the loan shark, the only reason I needed that money was because I ended paying a bunch of bills, thinking I could just skim by that month, then I ended up needing money. I had never considered the loan places before and was thinking if it would only cost $20 to get the $400 I needed, it would be worth it. I was completely ignorant to how bad loan places were. I never used it.

It's probably cheaper for them, since they probably wouldn't just be able to cut a check and forget about it. They'd probably have to dig back, verify that the over charge did in fact take place, etc. etc. Then account for it. Could cost more than its worth to them vs just saying "woops" here's a $1000 towards your next car, which corrects their mistake AND helps hook another sale.

Tim's (my salesman) response was pretty authentic. I really don't think he had any idea that this happened until I pointed it out. When we made the deal, he was ready to sign on the PO we drew up, it's just that the service department wasn't ready to release the car yet. When they finally had it ready, he was out sick.

That $1000 off your next car is a load of shit. They will have him buy another car from them, mess with the numbers a bit, and like magic his $1000 savings certificate amounts to toilet paper. I get fliers in the mail all the time for $3000 off your new car purchase. That's 3X the amount and they both aren't worth the paper they're printed on. It's a fucking scam to get you in the door and dry hump you till you buy a car you can't afford to make payments on.

In considered that. And it's in my thoughts if I will accept their "coupon" or not.

Buying "used" is even more of a scam than buying new.
A dealer was trying to sell me a 2006 V6(non EX-L version) Accord with 15k miles on it for $18.8k.
I got a brand new 2009 V6 EX-L Accord for $24k instead at the opposite side of the street.

And they are sister sites with the same dealer name and everything. Only difference was used cars vs. new.

The used car salesman saw me getting in my new Accord and said congratulations. I just looked at him and kept doing whatever it was I was doing.

How is that a scam? You just paid $5k for 15k less miles. Wow, you really showed them.

Yea, because I like group input. I have a lot on my plate and I don't like things going under my radar because I don't have time to think about it all.

I've never had a car loan so maybe I'm missing something here, but why is everyone saying the loan documents supersede his signed purchase agreement? He may have gotten a loan for $XX,000 + $600, but he only owed the dealer $XX,000 of that money.

I expected that you'd have some issue relating to accounting. Unfortunately you may have gotten screwed. If they're aware of your $1000 discount when you go to buy your next car, then that'll be a factor in their price negotiation. The lowest price they'll be willing to sell the car for will be $1000 more than it otherwise would have been. I don't know how you'd be able to keep that information from them until the end of the negotiation, because surely they have some computer record of a promised discount of $1000.

I guess you just have to be prepared to walk away if you think you're not getting a good enough deal next time. And pay closer attention in the future.

Was it necessary to be rude to the guy? It's not his fault people are willing to pay so much for used Hondas.

Some people are just combative towards car salesmen. I wouldn't have a problem giving it back if they were being too pushy or unprofessional with me, but most of the car dealers I've dealt with have been pretty straightforward.

Now you know to watch out for this kind of shit. When I bought my truck they tried to slip in some warranty I didn't ask for. I said something about it and they said I thought you said you wanted it. They knew I didn't they are sneaky fucks. I would of walked out if I wasn't getting a good deal already.

They took off the bogus warranty.

ive had that happen a few times. the first time i bought my own vehicle i didnt notice it and ended up paying a fuckton for a shitty warranty. never fell for that again.

at best you could use it as a bargaining chip to get a better deal on a new car, OP good luck. and read all the papers they give you before putting pen to paper this time.

OP, I don't know you from Adam but you seem to have a not-so-good rep here. I commend you how well you are holding up under the barrage of personal attacks.

There is one thing that confuses me though:

"Um $600 to me isn't "nothing". It's a weeks pay. It's my car payment. It's a lot of food. Hell, it's damn near the cost of going on a budget cruise."

This makes little fiscal sense to me. Assuming that you work 40 hours per week ... you make only $15 per hour and you spend a whopping 25% of your income on a car payment? How can you afford to spend this much on a car payment? Do you live with your parents? You make $32K per year and you drive a BMW?
