Its driving me nuts. I think the unseasonably warm summer temps have killed me card.

During the winter, it would run 480/370 easy as pie. I backed off to 470/360, figuring that it should be fine for the summer. EE2 has gotten steadily worse. At first, it was an artifact here or there, but right now it terrible. I've tried backing down to bone stock for a non pro (320/290) and it still artifacts.

Its a sad day. At least now I have an excuse to buy a 6800gt or something.

well OCing has its risks and certainly the rubbish cooler ATI outfitted the 9800pro with isnt gonna be much cop specially with the extra heat generated by a more than 100Mhz overclock

its a sweet overclock but you've probably killed it for good. good to see your NOT thinking of RMA'ing it. a 6800gt would be a good boost....negates the need to overclock...but id imagine you will anyway

Seriously, try getting an aftermarket cooler if you still want to use it, like an Arctic Cooling silencer.
My 9800np worked at 420, then suddenly would only work down at about 300MHz, got an AC and it's back to 440MHz and working.
RAM is Infineon stuff, so that sucks anyway.

Does it artifact in 2D or only in 3D ??? I'm buying an Arctic Silencer myself for a 9800 Pro .... the ATI stock coolers are just ... ickk.

Yes my GPU temperatures started increasing noticably with summer and I started looking into an extra cooler like a slot card or extra fan.

Actually turning on the AC solved the problem.
But I still watch temperatures like a hawk especially when hard gaming.
It doesn't take long for a card to cook if its redlining on temperature.

What drivers do you use? Some of them let you set the shutdown or warning temps.

People. Read my sig. I have the zalman after market HSFU+ BGA ramsinks. On stock, I couldn't do much more than 400/340.

This thing is a NP btw. 320/290, so a 50% OC from the core, and a good bit from the RAM too. Oh well, it lasted me nearly a year, and I only paid $169 for it, so I'm not complaining.

It only artifacts in one game so far, Empire Earth 2. I haven't been playing too much besides that and Stepmania (not really GPU intesive). It doesn't artifact after 5-6 runs of 3dm01 either. I just think this is the beginning of the end.

I had the same problem with a 9800 Pro. I definitively traced it to a faulty power supply. When I underclocked the card, the artifacting would go away. When the power supply suddenly died and I replaced it, the artifacting stopped 100%. You might want to watch for weird hard drive sounds and behavior too, which gradually crept up during this time.

I took it down to bone stock speeds, the artifacting went down, but not away. Even all the way down to 150mhz, it was still artifacting.

What did you take the RAM down to?
I found my 9800 hard locked when the Core was pushed too far, but africated only on the RAM.
Have you tried taking those clocks down? (Below stock)
