Ok well i followed the Mainstream Doom 3 Buyers Guide (http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2156&p=6) and got a AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 1MB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor. Thing is, im currently running Windows XP. When my bro found out he slapped me across the face and told me windows runs only 32 bit, and id need linux. Is this true?

I don't mind running linux, but i hear its complicated :frown: Ill install it if this is true

More importantly, the Athlon 64 merely offers a extended instruction set that includes 64bit operation, so all your current software will work.

You don't have to have a 64-bit operating system for AMD 64 chips. Well, you do it you want it to run 64 bit, but that guide tested the 32 bit capabilities of the processors.

So, you can run either 32-bit or 64-bit OSes on the AMD 64.

Err... your bro is not completely right. It's true, WindowsXP currently only runs at 32 bits, but by having a 64-bit chip, you will be ready to upgrade when WindowsXP for 64-bits comes out, in about 6 months. Meanwhile, you can run all your 32-bit programs (read: EVERYTHING out there), usually faster than an equivalently priced Intel 32-bit CPU. And I believe Doom3 will run beautifully on your system.

No need to run Linux. Doom3 doesn't run on it anyway. Knowing this, if you still want to use the full 64-bits of your CPU, today you would need to 1). Use a 64-bit Linux (SuSE, Mandrake, etc), or 2). Install a WindowsXP-64 Beta, as another poster suggested.

Good luck.

The +3400 you have is completly capable of running all 32 bit apps, and it's damn good at it too. Slap your bro back.

So it will work... but would linux be better? This comp is 99% for gaming, opr does it not matter?

windows has directX; linux does not. I would triple boot with linux/Primary OS/XP-64. XP-64 will be good for 64-bit compatible games. Until then, use regular 32 bit XP

let me be clear, unlike the previous posters:

Your Athlon 64 CPU will run 32bit code (ie WindowsXP) flawlessly In fact, it will run better than anything you've used before. It has the ability to run 64bit code as well, but for DOOM3 (which is only available in 32bit code) you should use a 32bit operating system (again WindowsXP).

The other posts *were* clear. However, it is also clear that the same $#^$ing information was posted like 5 times in this thread by others who didn't bother to read replies and see that it was already adequately answered.

ahhhh...isnt it ironic and funny how many people spend money for soemthing they (right now) dont even need

OK..your A64 3400+ is a great CPU, exactly the one i will get too soon whe i build my new system.

However - 64bit windows will still take some time...so..makes you wonder why people spend all that money on 64Bit power.....assuming you do NOT run Linux 64bit at this very moment.
(Who in his right mind does ?.....LOL)

As of right now....theres no point i really having 64bit capabilities with the CPU..and ONCE Longhorn (Win 64 Bit) comes out the processors will be very likely much cheaper than they are right now.

Dont get me wrong..i support AMD and 64Bit....and the A64 is the best CPU (IMHO) right now....but i stll think that people get fooled andmilked buying stuff where there is no need right at this moment.

You can of course try out Linux and see what you think about it, just dont expect the same amount of software out for it (especially games) as is for WIndows.

But i think it wouldnt make much sense "just to run Linux" because your CPU has 64bit capabilities Enjou your A64 either way (windows or 64Bit lInux)...its a niiiiice CPU !

The A64 line supporst 64bit programs in the future. and all 32bit programs currently. Think of it like a pentium 3 to a pentium 4. these are the next generation of AMD processors. They just happen to support 64 bit programs.
