I think I passed a kidney stone last night

At about 3:30 AM I got up to get a drink of water and then bam!!!!!!!!!

A massive pain in my back right at my right kidney. It felt like someone was kicking me with a steel toed boot over and over again. I could barely move and then it got worse.

I started vomiting and that is a very rare thing for me. Between that and my back I thought I was going to die. At first I thought maybe it was appendicitis but the location was wrong.

I then discovered I had this incredible urge to pee but couldn't. I then realized it was probably a kidney stone. I sat down and it helped a bit. But I was so tired and in so much pain I decided to try to sleep. That didn't work either. It hurt even more to lie down.

It was one rough night. The pain finally started to lessen around 11:00AM. It was then I took an Advil and went to lie down. I slept until 3:00PM. I felt a lot better and went to work.

It's still a little tender but no where near as painful as last night.

cliffs:
woke up and got serious pain
vomited because of pain
probably kidney stone
no sleep til 11:00AM
don't wish that agony on my worst enemy

Been there, done that. For me, drinking a lot of water has always helped. Now I know to recognize the early signs and I can start drinking more water before it ever gets bad.

But the first time, when I didn't know what it was...oh my god...

same here. drinking lots of water.

at least when I woke up I was able to pee again.

The amount of swearing I was doing last night would have put a gansta rap group to shame.

I also learned how easy it would be to get addicted to pain killers...

The first bad stone I had, I went to the doc, and when he gave me the pain shot, the relief was so fast and so incredible...absolute bliss...

The docs, of course, were unimpressed with my nausea, vomiting, sweating, ghostly whiteness, and swearing. They have seen it all a thousand times...

Did you have any symptoms before your passing the stone?

Sounds like a kidney stone alright. Went through 2 of them. Pain is unbearable. Symptoms for me were the sudden pains I would get after drinking (soda or something else other than water) it would start moving around causing excruciating pain and I would be on the bed or floor toughing it out till it went away. Thanks for this post though, I have not been drinking as much water as a should have...

the last time I had pains similar to last night was when I had gastroenteritis. That was painful and very unpleasant.

I hope I never get one.

Scary because I've heard eating a lot of nuts can cause them, and I eat probably 2-4 pounds of cashews/peanuts/almonds/pistachios/pecans/hazelnuts and sunflower seeds a month...

Eating alot of nuts? I have never heard of that and knowing that my dad has passed like 30 of them I have tried to really prevent them for me.

I hope you never get one, too.

that's a lot of nuts. I eat a small container of mixed nuts once every 2 or 3 months.

Yeah, I think I might have had one earlier this summer. I just remember waking up in the middle of the night feeling strange uncomfortable. By the time I was more...conscious of what was actually going on, I realized how much pain I was in. First thought was that I was dying and needed to call 911 or go to the hospital. I didn't, though...just sat by the toilet for maybe 20-30 minutes before it suddenly disappeared. Worst pain I've ever experienced. Of course, it might have been something different, but a kidney stone best fits my experience.

I had my first stone a few weeks back, it was hell...

I didn't have much pain from the kidney down though, more on the way out was the problem. Maybe it was oblong and went sideways there. Or it could have formed in my bladder, not sure...

So as I was laying in the emergency room last night, all I could think about was my post in this thread. And asking the doctor for more meds. Only 2 years.. lame.

It was pretty bad, although not quite as bad as I had imagined.. but not something I would want to go through again.

It was strange though, I was laying there in agony and the nurse was really wanting a urine sample, but I insisted I didn't have to go.. just an impression from the pain I guess, because when I tried, I did go.. and then the pain stopped.

They said it probably made its way to my bladder. I'm like fantastic, so I may still have to pass it? Yep...

I'm drinking gallons of water and cranberry juice....

I've had a couple stones. Thats why I drink nothing but water now. It sucks at first but you get used to it. Anything not to go through that pain again. I can take pain, but that I can't handle. I've never been shot before, but I think I would rather then have another stone.

Be freaking glad you passed it.

I had to have mine removed, but before they did that they put a stint in and made me wait a couple weeks to see if it would come out on it's on. But I was drugged up pretty good for those two weeks and didn't have to work so guess there's a bright side (was in the army so still got paid also).

My sympathies Woode and Eli!!!

Thankfully I don't have that issue, but honestly from what I've heard from others it still worries me.

I'll never forget one of my girlfriends in college taking me home to Ocala to meet the folks for Thanksgiving. Her gigantic father and I hit it off immediately. Within an hour of talk over beers, conversation shifted to injuries and scars. He was in shorts and had real beauty visible on his leg from catching some lead back in the 80s. Some guy went nuts and tried to kill him and his brother. He's telling me the crazy details, and I'm grimacing over the surgery pics and descriptions and suddenly he says, Wait right there! and runs off into the house.

I'm looking at my girl, a little worried, like "did you tell him what we stopped and did on the way here or something?" because he got really serious and abrupt all of a sudden and is now "getting something."

Before I can scold myself for being paranoid about "kill the boyfriend" scenarios, he explodes back out of the house with a huge grin on his face - "I'd rather get shot 10 more times than deal with these bastards again!" and throws me a black plastic 35mm film container. I pop the lid, and empty into my hand 6 bronzed kidney stones, 2 of them almost the size of a damn Jelly Belly jellybean. "No way in hell I was flushing those, worked too hard for'em!" Then he got really serious, said passing stones was the single most painful thing he had ever done, and he might consider eating a bullet if he had to do it again. Pretty sure he was being quite serious. I later heard that ol Gigantic Bill was quite the badass when he was younger: no stranger to violence and known for taking on small groups of dickheads and putting them all down. Had an autographed pic of him and Gene LeBell in their living room, so I believe it. 404, Pussy Not Found.

If you guys went through what made that guy almost break out into a cold sweat just recollecting about it, then you definitely have both my sympathy and a pat on the back for just bearing down and riding it out.

Surprised about the juice, isn't the beneficial stuff in it so low it doesn't really do anything?

I would think they'd hit ya with quantities of distilled water; little to no mineral content and slightly acidic.

Hang in there dude, I hope they break out you out a Fentenyl lollipop for when it's time for your friend to navigate the prostate.

Until they get a stone to sample, they don't really know what its made out of. They can form in both acidic and alkaline environments.

The main thing is to just drink as much fluid as you can overall, I think....

Dear Boston Dynamics,
Please begin construction of Micro Dog, a tiny robot that can comfortably fit in a human urethra, for purposes of kidney and ureter inspection, as well as for kidney stone destruction.
Please ensure that it has accurate targeting scanners though.

Thank you.

But with Google's acquisition of them, I'm sure they'd use any resulting video or telemetry data as part of an advertising campaign.

Dear god(s),
Kidney stones? Really? Short of simply having a design that would prevent their formation, you couldn't make them come out as pearls? Spherical, smooth, easy-to-pass, attractive, valuable pearls? Nah. We'll go with rough crystalline pellets of terror that are worth nothing, which will get passed through some tubes that are well-equipped with nerves, so as to thoroughly document their every move.

Edit:
One prevention measure, per Wikipedia:

"Increasing total fluid intake, with the objective of increasing urine output to more than two liters per day"

...And what, change your full-time job to "urination" and nothing else? Get a urinal at your desk or workstation? Good god.
Or am I just a Small-Bladdered American?

When I saw my old thread pop up today, I was like don't tell me some spammer found it.

So I was glad/sad to see it was Eli.

Sorry to hear about your stone(s). I hope it wasn't too painful. How are you doing now?

Kidney stones are excruciatingly painful. Maybe this thread can serve as an educational thing. This is a club no one wants to join.

Dear Jeff,

I know, I should have made the stones form nice and smooth and pearl-like, but if I'd done that, then the true purpose of kidney stones would have been wasted.

And that purpose is to give you a small hint as to what a woman endures during childbirth.

You're welcome.
