I think I want a Sony RX100 IV. Anyone have one?

I have a couple of Canon dSLRs (7D and 20D), but they're big and bulky with all the lenses and flashes so I only occasionally carry them around. Most of the time I take pix with my iPhone. Unfortunately, the iPhone is still just a phone, so it has some significant limitations in terms of flexibility as a camera and image quality.

I also have a small Canon point and shoot, but the quality just isn't good enough for what I want, so most of the time I just fall back to the iPhone, again. I also have a waterproof Olympus which I take to the beach of course.

So, I'm thinking I want something with the more flexibility and image quality than the iPhone, but without the bulkiness of a dSLR setup.

I think the RX100 IV fits the bill. The previews suggest it is great for image quality and sensor quality, and allows uber high ISO captures, 4K video, and insane 1000 fps slow motion HD video. However, they also say the interface kind of sucks.

Anyone have one?

My mate has one and reckons its better than his big old clunky SLR.

The RX200 now replaces it I think.

I own a RX100 m1 and RX100 m4

the image quality is very similar across the lines. each version just helps you take photos (doesn't give you better quality photos, except m3 with the wider+faster lens)

m1 = cheapest and smallest
m2 = hotshoe, tilt screen, wifi
m3 = wide angle and faster lens(but lose tele), evf, tilt+180 screen, wifi apps, ND
m4 = m3 with mostly video-related features, burst, electronic shutter, evf resolution upgrade

my thoughts on the m4:
+ electronic shutter + burst, really good
+ autofocus is much better
+ 1080p 60p mode is very good with intelli-IS
~ HFR (240-1000fps) is nice, but it's limited to 2-4s... need a lot of light for 1000fps (see the rx100 IV hfr videos on youtube)
~ 4K - limited to 5 minutes, overheating easily in NYC summer (camera shuts down). Only optical is is available
- interface is really bad....

If I have 4K+slog2 enabled... I need to dig through the menu to disable slog2(slog2 affects picture mode too)... there are (only 3)memory recalls (MR) modes available that helps a little

In Auto mode, ND filter option is grayed out (it's set to AUTO).. When you try to select it, it only says "option is not available in this mode", doesn't tell you why or what to do if you want to change it

if you dont' care about the (mostly video related) upgrades, the m3 and m1 are good options to get
m1 = cheap
m3 = wide angle + wifi+ evf

I think quite a few of us here have some variant of the RX100. It's a good companion to a DSLR. Definitely THE best compact point and shoot available. I'd be careful though. Every version of that camera has grown in size from the previous one. If you don't want the pop-up optical viewfinder, you might look into the Mk II.

Nice review I have a M1. Got a M4 coming tomorrow. Will be interested to see how it performs.

Just googled a 2012 earlier RX100 review, sensor size is supposedly 1"... not bad. Alternative might be Canon G1x with a 1.5" sensor?

I've no experience with either, but I do have a Sony A7 and three Canons. They haven't let me down yet. Love the bigger sensor size though.

if you do, g1x is available refurb for $252

My question would be: What do you want? quality vs size?

RX100 is smaller, can squeeze into (jacket/trouser) pocket. It's as though Sony fixed the size/dimensions, and designed everything else around that size (lens, sensor size, ...)

you can't fit your g1x in a pocket easily. quality-wise (and ISO and zoom), g1x would win. Also, why not a6000 ( APS-C?)

I'm happy with the images from my m1:

I just got the RX100 M2 and haven't had a chance to test it beyond random snapshots around the house yet. Some initial impressions, I believe both of which will apply to the M4:

--The M2 is TINY. If my memory's not failing me (and being too lazy to check Google for specs), it's smaller than the Lumix LX5 and the Canon G9, my two most recent cameras prior to this. Because of this, I highly recommend getting an optional grip. I bought the Sony-branded one which adds a significant amount of stability when I hold the camera one-handed.

--One of the big complaints I've read here pertains to the menus/interface which I'm finding relatively easy to use, coming from a Lumix LX5 which has some *seriously* awful menus. My opinion might change after taking out the RX100 and actually trying to manipulate the settings, but from my initial tinkering and testing the menus are way more intuitive than those of the LX5. That might not be a high bar for comparison but it's what I got out of it.
