I'm usually a real night owl but the last 2-3 weeks I can't seem to get to sleep at all. I'll be dragging ass all through the day, and no matter what, I can't fall asleep when I go to bed at night. I usually lay there for a couple of hours.

I've been taking vitamins and trying to drink plenty of water. I haven't really been under any stress lately.

Any tips on what to try to be able to fall asleep quicker? I'd like some suggestions that don't include drugs. I don't want to be taking pills to fall asleep.

And don't suggest rubbing one out either

Cut all power to your house. You'll be so bored by 8 or 9 PM (and you won't be able to see anything) that you'll fall asleep by default.

- exert yourself physically (workout, sports, etc.) sometime during the day (not right before sleeping).
- exert yourself in bed (preferably with your SO) ... biologically this has proven to be effective in males.

You need to shut down your computer, go outside and do things. Take a walk, go for a run, hit the gym, go swimming etc...

I think rh71 pretty much covered it with this post (see above).

Chew some valerian root, you can get it in pill form, but it's a natural substance, not some medication, so it's not so bad.

My first year at college, I drank Mountian Dew like their was no tomorrow, then started with caffiene/energy pills, and the energy drinks. During finals the second semester I got maybe 1/2 hr of sleep for 2 weeks. (I went through an entire bottle of pills). Crashed for about three days. Came down hard.

Also all through high school, i never slept well for anything, even doctor's sleeping pills.

But after my extreme finals week, I stopped drinking pop. Never did I sleep better in my life. Unfortunely, i still go through little spurts where I feel I have to have soda. But nothing like my high school/ college days where I would easily drink at least a 2-liter a day. (I got free soda where I worked, becuase it was there, I drank it)

So my suggestion to you is that you cut out caffeine (I forgot to mention all the coffee I drank too), it WILL be hard, but if you can , you never regret it.

Take a really hot, really long shower. If yuo really want to get into it... get some nice body wash with chamomile or lavender to use as well. Or, if you don't want to hand over your man card all the way... just get a lavender candle to burn for an hour before you wnat to go to sleep!

I don't drink any coffee and I rarely drink any soda....

If I don't want to hand over my man card I should just burn a candle for an hour?

Hmmm I think I need a personal masseuse. That would put me to sleep.

Wish I knew. I've resorted to doping myself up with Tylenol PM. If I don't, I'm up all night having panic attacks.

Exercise as early in the day as you can (at least 4 hours before you go to bed).

Don't eat within 2 hours of going to bed (and try not to eat a gigantic dinner).

Use your bed only for sleeping (not for watching tv or chilling or whatever - you need to train your mind/body that bed=sleep). Make sure your mattress/pillow are comfortable.

Go to bed and get up at about the same time every day (to get your circadian rythym in sync with your lifestyle).

Try to "wind down" before you go to bed and establish a routine to help relax you and train your body to get ready sleep. The warm shower before bed is a good idea (it helps to relax you). You can try drinking some chamomile (herbal, non-caffienated) tea (again to help relax you). Read a book for half an hour. Try very light stretching. Some people benefit from slowly tensing, then relaxing different muscle groups (the smaller/more isolated the bettter).

You can try taking Melatonin or valerian root before you go to sleep for a couple days (not a long term thing - you shouldn't use any king of sleeping pills for more than a week without consulting a doctor).

For some people (I'm not one of them however), listening softly to the radio or some sort of white noise will help them fall asleep.

If you're still awake after 45 mins or so, get up and do something else for about half an hour (preferably not staring at a computer screen or the tv - those only wake you up more, not encourage you to sleep) then try again.

I'm a moderate insomniac. The best way to control it is to keep a rigid sleep schedule. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Even if you stay up late on weekends, still try to wake up as close to your normal waking time as possible.

Vigorous exercise during the day also helps, but try not do it within 4-6 hours of your normal bedtime.

Edit: I see some people recommending sleep pills. I would definately not go this route unless it's under the supervision of a doctor. It's very easy to get dependent on them.
