i think my power supply just died, need advice

alright I have a 420w turbolink ps that came with my chieftec, and its been working fine for the past year perfectly fine, but starting yesterday, i turned off my computer, and I tried to turn it back on, and it wouldn't do anything. I waited 10 minutes and I tried again and it miraculously started. After that I turned it on and off and it was fine, so I thought no problems. But just about half an hour ago, I turned off the system so I could plug in my floppy, and it wouldn't turn on again. I waited again, and nothing. So I tried my roommates power supply, and voila, it booted. I waited 10 minutes later with my own ps, and still nothing. So I tried my roomys ps again, and boom, it works again. I'm assuming its the power supply, unless theres some issue with the motherboard. I tried my ps with my roomys system, and no dice.

Is there an inexpensive powersupply that'll power my system? My system is
1700+ @ 2300mhz 2v
a dvd drive
burner
80gig hd
3 smart fan 2's
3 40cfm fans
and the specs in my profile

When youve tested your ps on two machines and no go then I think its safe to agree your assumption of your ps dying is correct

Again im sure someone with more knowledge will be able to explain the Quality Vs Quantity thing for you

As im not experienced with PSU's ill leave that to whom whoever feels they can type up some info for you

Form what ive read Antec and Enermax are the best you can get

You can easily get away with a 300W-350W *QUALITY* power supply with what you're running. Antec and Enermax are good suggestions. I've been looking at the 365VE series from Enermax lately for my own purposes.

Another vote for the Enermax EG365P-VE(FM) 350W PSU. I have the FMA version with the adjustable fan dial on back. It is a high quality PSU.

Yea definately there is something wrong with your power supply if you tried your friends and it works. I also recommend the Enermax 350W one. Im using it and its great.. silent and the back and bottom fans both cool your system nicely... The PS is so important that it is often overlooked, and i learned it the hard way... i've seen first hand what those PS that are included with the case are no good... they do more harm than good in the long run.

i just returned the antech blue ps ....when i shut down windows it would not turn off the puter ...i would haave to turn the swithc off on the ps then when i turned the swidht back on the power supply woul come back on before i could turn the puter swich on....i tested thing the same way ..switching ps 's from puters ..when i returned it to fry's the girl said it was all in my head ,,i was imagining things and that i should lay off the wacky tacky......i told her that she was full of dice and to exchange it are i would bring the whole system back for exchange ...she stuck the defective ps in the box with the open box sticker on it and some poor soul is probaly going though hell right now trying to troubleshoot a defective mobo...when it is the ps.........

Chances are that it might work for awhile and then shut down for one reason or another. Perhaps it is heat cause the fan isn't working, or maybe it has to do with the wiring. Whatever the case, it is time to replace it before it dies completely and messes something up.

If you want a really cheap psu which is a very good quality name, I don't think you can beat the price or performance for a Sparkle 300watt at around $27 US. You can find it at newegg. I have more components in my case, including 8 fans, and I replaced my antec for the time being with one, and it's been running strong for about 6-8months now(haven't bothered to get the antec warrantied yet).

Wattage is not as important as the amp load that each rail supplies. Make sure that you get a psu with sufficient amps and one that supplies at least 300-350watt minimum.

I haven't heard about the 8rda cold boot problem, but I'm curious to know now cause I was thinking about buying an 8rda+ on a new upgrade.. hmm. Let me know what you find out.
