I think something is wrong with this fan

You can see the fan right in the center of that picture. Anyway, the standard running speed for this fan is 9000 rpm, and it lacks any sort of speed control. I recently heard a strange labored noise from inside the case and noticed that the fan speed had dropped from its standard 9000 to a mere 7500. Stopping the fan got rid of the occasional...sound, I don't know how to describe it. Like a labored fan, basically.

Anyway, afer being blown out with compressed air and a cold reboot, it's moving at 5000-6000 rpm. My power rails are all fine, so I don't think it's a PSU problem. The actual northbridge isn't in danger; the fan design is retarded and the northbridge doesn't get terribly warm anyway. But I'm concerned about what's going on and wondering if it doesn't imply more serious problems. In any case, I'd like things to be back to normal...

Oh, and if I end up replacing this stupid fan, I'm looking at the two Zalman passive coolers. What's the difference between the two (the blue and the yellow) ?

[EDIT] The fan speed appears to be rising slowly after the system has been running for a while. Don't know if it will reach nominal speed again. (Later: no, it's not happening. It's not even reaching 8000 rpm. The fan's probably dying, eh?)

Temporary solution:

1) Disassemble the fan and lube the spindle with some 3-in-1 oil.

2) Slow down the fan with a Zalman fanmate.

(What you heard was a dirty, underlubricated worn spindle.)

Permanent solution:

Get rid of it and get something better.

HTH.

I've more or less decided that I'd like to replace this thing...apparently north bridge fans failing is a common thing. So what's the difference between the two Zalman coolers?

I have a new A8N-SLI deluxe mobo, and the chipset fan runs at about 7000RPM all the time. Even when the chipset is only at 33C. It seems to be common to ASUS motherboards i guess.
