so i had to perform my first practice female pelvic exam this past week...well, part of the training involves learning how to talk to patients. I told the patient i was going to inspect her external gentialiae. The midwide stopped me and told me that those words were too big or intimidating for some patients. I didn't know what to call it then. The midwife AND the practice patient told me to say "i'm going to take a look at your lips now." I'm dead serious. The practice patient told me that "lips is what's used in magazines and stuff." I asked the midwife if i was supposed to be as casual or as layman as "lips" and she told me yes. Oh well...how many of ur gyn's out there refer to the labia majora/minora as lips during the gyn exam?! i thk the midwife and practice patient wanted me to shock a future patient or at least get slapped.
