so i had to perform my first practice female pelvic exam this past week...well, part of the training involves learning how to talk to patients. I told the patient i was going to inspect her external gentialiae. The midwide stopped me and told me that those words were too big or intimidating for some patients. I didn't know what to call it then. The midwife AND the practice patient told me to say "i'm going to take a look at your lips now." I'm dead serious. The practice patient told me that "lips is what's used in magazines and stuff." I asked the midwife if i was supposed to be as casual or as layman as "lips" and she told me yes. Oh well...how many of ur gyn's out there refer to the labia majora/minora as lips during the gyn exam?! i thk the midwife and practice patient wanted me to shock a future patient or at least get slapped.

If a doctor said that to me I'd probably look at them like they were crazy.

Having never had a female pelvic exam, given that I'm not a female, I don't know...

However that sounds pretty ridiculous.

Let me guess, for a mamogram, you should say you're sqeezin' the melons.

Are you a GP or a gynocologist?

I've been to ob/gyn offices with my wife when she was pregnant. After browsing the waiting room, I concluded that I would rather pump septic with a straw than be a gyn.

I think doctors are UNDER-paid.

Good luck

Me too, but then again we're equipped differently.

Docs always tell me to use simple words to make sure patients understand. I always ask patients if they're "peeing and pooping ok" instead of asking about bowel movements and urination. But telling a patient that you are going to exam their "lips"...hm...that's a tough call.

I have to perform my first pelvic exam in a couple of months. I am not looking forward to it.

How you communicate with a particular patient depends on that person. Part of the art. You don't want to talk to the PhD in molecular genetics the same way as someone who is completely uneducated. You want to talk to, not up or down. So yes, sometimes you have adjust your vocabulary. No need to get too crude though.

If they open their mouth, it's the wrong choice of words.

  • Ornery: "Honey, I'm going to inspect your external gentialiae!"

Mrs. Ornery: "Ooh, I LOVE it when you talk dirty to me!"

Those words are just fine, shouldn't be any problem at all. If the patient acts shocked just say "I mean your exterior genetalia". No biggie. And then, after you get the legs spread, pull a clothes pin out of your shirt pocket and clamp it to your nose and go about your business.

I prefer doctors to remain professional... Such a loose (no pun intended ) use of language would imply that the doctor is a moron.... especially a YOUNG dr.

Use the right word. I would probably say somethig like... I'm going to begint the pelvic exam.... the patient knows (basically) what they are there for.... there's no need to go into specifics unless it's warranted.

You could say "I'll need you to undress from the waist down and remove your underwear so I can begin the pelvic exam..."

Exterior genitalia is a bit "gross"
