I thought Routers were supposed to be easy!

Just got a Linksys BEFSR11 Router. I've got two networked computers (Windows 98) with a Westell Wirespeed DSL modem (PacBell DSL with Enternet 300 PPPoE). I hooked all the hardware up the way it's supposed to go. The manual says to disable PPPoE. I did that. Then, it says to type in http://192.168.1.1 in my web browser to configure the router. Well, nothing happens! It's the equivalent of typing a web address in your browser without being online. With PPPoE installed, I cannot access the internet. With it removed, I can't access the internet. This is getting frustrating. I can't even get to the SETUP screens to set up the router. What am I doing wrong? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It's 192.168.1.1

and maybe you need to delete all your internet settings from the computer so you can log into the router (also, delete any proxy clients if you have any)

make sure to check your cables too, I spent 6 hours working with a router only to find it had a bad cable (UGH)

i have the same setup you describe (well, maybe 2 more computers on a hub out of the befsr11) and it works fine. when i set up i actually uninstalled the pppoe software that came from southbell, then got rid of the tcp/ip protocol.
then reboot and do a fresh install of tcp/ip. boot and configure the router at http://192.168.1.1 as per the manual, being sure to check the enable pppoe box and put in all of the info required.
reboot and you should be set.
good luck

Make sure you have it plugged in... Don't you hate when somebody says that. No really, you should wear a pair of safety glasses when operating your router or any other power tool. No really, really, you must have a defective BEFSR11 because my BEFSR41 worked straight out of the box. The 192.168.1.1 setup with a blank password should have got you in. Just exchange it for another one.

i hope you UNINSTALLED the pppoe software if you had it installed onto your PC.

make sure your computer is using DHCP.

Tried uninstalling / reinstalling TCP/IP. No difference. Checked all the cables. The cables are fine. Still can't connect.

What are the odds of buying a defective router? I might add that I bought the router from Fry's, so the odds shoot up dramatically.

Make sure your IP address is correct.

-Start/Run
-type: winipcfg
-More Info
-Choose your Network Card from the drop down box.

Your IP address should be 192.168.1.XXX

Yeah, I've tried resetting the router. When the router isn't hooked up, yeah, I get online just fine. Okay, I checked my IP address with winipcfg and my IP address is nowhere close to 192.168.1.XXX. Just looked in the manual and it says my address has to be within the default range of 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. So how do I change it? What do I do? I think I'm getting warmer...

-Control Panel/Network
-Highlight TCP/IP->Your Network Card
-Click Properties
-Choose the IP Address Tab
-Put a check on the Specify an IP address
-Manually enter in numbers in the IP address box that fit in the 192.168.1.XXX range
-Click OK and reboot your computer
-Check your IP address by Start/Run/winipcfg
-If your address is correct, go back Control Panel/Network and change the setting from Specify an IP address to Obtain an IP Address automatically.
-Also, go to your other computers in your network and repeat the procedure. Give each computer a unique IP address.

I have had the WORST luck with linksys! Out of 6 products I have dealt with, 4 went belly up or were DOA! Heh, one of the times I pulled a linksys nic out of our used supply and it worked for 1 day before it went dead, so I went to Best buy and bought a new one, installed, no LED. :frown: Nuttin but D-Link or Netgear for me.

When working on a fritzed network, the first thing I do is replace all linksys cards......

If you are still able to connect without any problems to the internet with your computer off, it sounds like you did not remove any of the settings from your ISP and turn your computer into a strict network only computer and then connect to the router then the internet. Quick suggestion: if the OTHER computer did not haev internet access like yours does, use it to set up the router and then monkey around with your computer and its tcp settings.
