I was never what I considered a "hardcore" facebook person. I'd check it on my breaks at work and a few times a night at home. I didn't post much but it was kind of fun.

A couple weeks ago I decided I would take a break from it. No real reason...I just like to stop doing things every once in a while. Well now I have realized how stupid that site is. I kind of miss chatting with my mom on there but other than that, I don't miss it a bit. It seems like even the positive people I know use it to bitch, moan and complain. If you took out the complaining and game requests, the sit would be empty.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Pick up phone, talk to mom? Or Skype if long-distance is a concern...

The inanity should be the least of your concerns. I'd worry more about the built in man in the middle attack vector.

I never even made one for the reasons you pointed out and more lol, If someone is a part of my life then i'll be in contact with them otherwise I don't need acquaintances from past and present knowing my life or nor do I give two craps about what they do on a daily basis.

call me weird but I bow out of the 'social networking' bs...

This, I even text my mom too. Facebook is retarded. So many people use it as their main communication device when a phone is much easier.

I'm sorry, but your opinion about Facebook holds 0 weight. You have averaged near 11 posts a day for 8 years on here, and unless you literally type all the posts within a few minutes (not likely) - you probably spend an hour or so a day for 8 years talking to strangers. At least alot of the people on Facebook are communicating with people they remotely know and even more so when it comes to parents and siblings.

Anandtech is your Facebook, and you use it to talk to random weirdos.

I don't use Facebook either btw...not interested.

I see nothing wrong with Facebook as long as you don't let it take over your life. I see it more as a tool like I see a phone, email etc...

And no, I will not accept your request for me to help you find your missing peas or plow your field.

If you don't see anything wrong with it, you haven't been paying attention.

Eben Moglen said:
Of course, like all other innovation there were unintended consequences. The browser made the Web very easy to read. Though we built Apache, though we built the browsers, though we built enormous numbers of things on top of Apache and the browsers, we did not make the Web easy to write. So a little thug in a hooded sweatshirt made the Web easy to write, and created a man in the middle attack on human civilization, which is unrolling now to an enormous music of social harm. But that's the intermediary innovation that we should be concerned about. We made everything possible including, regrettably, PHP, and then intermediaries for innovation turned it into the horror that is Facebook. This will not turn out, as we can already see from the stock market result, to be a particularly favourable form of social innovation. It's going to enrich a few people. The government of Abu Dhabi, a Russian thug with a billion dollars already, a guy who can't wait to change his citizenship so he doesn't have to pay taxes to support the public schools, and a few other relics of 20th century misbehavior.

The difference is that the random weirdos on Anandtech actually say things that are interesting, or outrageous, or funny, or stupid, or ingenious. They don't spend 95% of their time posting vague complaints about how "I need to stop letting people take advantage of me" in order to garner sympathy from their friends.

Unlike some of us, most of us don't use this as our blog, take pictures of our food, post how we feel, check in at places, complain about relationships, etc etc. There's a reason why I don't go in P&N or L&R.

Most people on my facebook post pics they find interesting or funny. It's a bit like 9gag with inspirational stuff added on. It's a time waster so far, but I don't really notice much complaining. Maybe you need some better friends or unsubscribe the whiners from your newsfeed.

I only use Facebook to look at pics of hot chicks. Once they have kids the gravy train of "look at me I'm a hot chick" pics get replaced with "I have the first most awesomest cutest water head miracle baby child ever" pics though. It kinda sucks.

I deleted my Facebook about 5 years ago after being annoyed that 90% of my friends were people I didn't care about. I tried unfriending those people, but apparently that was offensive and hurting people's feelings. I got a lot of shit for unfriending people, so I decided to give up and deleted my Facebook.

About a year later, I signed up again deciding that I would only add my true friends. I started getting friend requests from acquaintances and they were getting offended when I didn't accept. I had several (it must have been 20+ people) ask my friends what I had against them. They were taking me not accepting their friend request as a sign that I disliked them. Not accepting the friend requests was actually hurting my relationships with these people. So once again I deleted Facebook.

I really like the idea of Facebook, but I don't want to log on and see a bunch of junk from people that I really don't have an interest in keeping track of.

Some of us would kill to have friend requests. I've been removed/ignored from so many users of Facebook that I feel like harming myself sometimes. I once requested 40 people who I knew on a day to day basis, and only 3 accepted and 2 removed me within the hour once they placed a picture with my name. The last person just said thanks for the add.

Jesus fuck that's sad.

There are tons of people who would add a complete stranger just for the sake of getting their friend count up. I think most would actually.

I recently saw a post from an old work acquaintance about how he had pared down his friend list to 4000. I immediately pared it down by another one.

I like Facebook, it allows me to keep up with friends, and especially family. My entire extended family (both sides) lives in Baltimore -- we're the only part of the family in NC. So I use it to post pics of our new son so they can see him, and see pictures of my many cousins and their family.

And while I talk with my friends that live cross country on the phone, seeing pictures of them and their travels is always fun. I hadn't seen my buddy that moved to Seattle in nearly two years, but Facebook allowed us to keep I contact (thankfully, I got to see him last month when he came back for a wedding).

I dunno, I guess I just don't understand the Facebook hate. Some people just like hating on shit just to hate. First it was hating on MySpace, then it was Facebook, then Twitter. Now it's "cool" to hate on Pinterest and Instagram.

We get it, you don't like popular sites/tools... get over yourself and move on.
