I wanna tear someone's head off

My wife and I live in an apartment complex. When we want to send out mail we put it next to the door on a little ledge that sits above the mailboxes. Well awhile ago we mailed out our Credit card payment and all was well. We are just about done paying it off.

Today we just received our credit card statement. It shows no change in balance and in fact a delinquency for not paying last month! WTH? The check was $1600 made out to the credit card company. We call up the credit card company because our bank shows the check cleared. Visa has no clue about this payment and show that it has never been cashed. Looking further at my bank statement online it shows that the check cleared the very NEXT day after we made it out. Which only tells me one thing. Someone in this freakin apartment complex stole the check and cashed it!

Ever have those violent spells where you feel like you want to punch the crap out of someone? Dumb question...I'm sure you have. Well I have been trying to remain calm but my keyboard is being the victim of my anger.

My questions is this: How can a low level IQ individual decide to open our mail...see a check written out to a credit card company...and just be able to cash it as normal? This makes no farking sense! Anyone else have problems like this? Needless to say mail will now be dropped off at the post office instead of left here to wait for the mailman.

Now on monday I will have to address the situation with our bank. How do they handle it from there? I realize a copy of the check will need to be ordered showing the endorsement. Once it is recvd we will then see the signature of Johnny F. Retard with his crayon signature...what happens from here? Does the bank pursue the financial institution that allowed the cashing of this payment? Do we get screwed out of our own money?

Anyone with an experience similar please let me know of how it was resolved. I'd love to spend 5 minutes in the ring with this ass and the other crackhead that stole our credit card and debit card last month! (talk about a streak of bad luck)

Yeah, you kinda got screwed... sounds like your apt. complex doesn't have the best security measures in place.

Contact the bank, contact the credit card company that your acct. has been compromised (I guess?), and sit back and see what the bank can do.

If it was really a month or two ago, you may be SOL. Just depends on the timeline your bank sets for it.

I do have to say... the fact that it was cashed the day after you put it in the mail was extraordinarily suspicious... I'm surprised that you didn't catch it.

This is one reason I will never live in an apartment.

I would assume that your bank will persue whoever cashed the check for the individual, and then probably the person who endorsed the check (I honestly can't forsee someone putting their own name on it). I'd knock on every door and let them know about this situation, and ask if they saw anything... maybe one of them will know something, or you can sweat out the culprit.

damn man, that sucks...not sure what to do about it. I would be on the lookout for anyone in your apartment named "Visa" though...if you find 'em, that's your man

Tell the bank that you want blood. They'll find who did it. Also, this is a good reason to use those blue USPS boxes around town.

lol...thanks for the suggestion. I will see what the bank can do. When we had our debit and credit cards stolen the only thing that went thru was a $300 withdraw. The bank gave the funds back and I am guessing they are pursuing it from there. Hopefully all will end well because we can not afford for this not to go towards our credit card balance.

The bank is at fault as they should have checked who the check was made out to. Anyway it should be traceable.

Would you leave 1600 bucks in cash laying on a ledge in plain sight? Why would you do that with important mail?
Try putting it in a mailbox next time.

we don't even put outgoing mail in our mailbox anymore. it goes straight to those nice blue boxes that ppl can't just reach in and pull your mail out of. a few ppl around here had checks stolen out of their mailbox and cashed, and they were out the money. i can't imagine setting mail on the ledge outside the door.

You can console that with the fact that the person will be caught. Tampering with the mail is a federal offense. Plus you have a pretty clear chain of events leading to the identity of the person. Either they deposited the check into their account and you have their account number and hence their name, or they cashed the check at a check cashing place and they are on video. If they are on video it won't be too hard to identify the person in question. So basically this person is going to jail. Don't bother ripping someones head of, Bubba in jail cell 362 will do a bit worse than that for you.

I'm sure the criminal cashed it at one of those seedy "we cash checks" quasi-businesses. I never understood the purpose of those places other than an easy out for someone to cash fraudulent checks.

For people that don't have bank accounts? Most banks make a big hassle about cashing checks if the check isn't drawn from them (if they'll even do it at all). Also, years ago when I used those places, they always made sure you looked directly into the camera behind the nifty bulletproof glass before they completed the transaction.

btw, as far as the original topic of this thread..... how dumb. I wouldn't leave even a $100 check sitting on the shelf above my mailboxes. I see them all the time though. Medical info, social security documents, credit card statements..... just sitting there for any kid or cretin to pick it up and do as they please. Next time drop it in a mailbox, or put it in your company's outgoing mail. Anything but basically leave it on the sidewalk and hope somebody doesn't "find" it.

A related story: A friend of mine had a doctor's bill for around $2000. She wrote a check and thought she mailed it. About a month later she got a call from the doctor asking where's the money? Around the same time, her father noticed that he had made a payment of around $2000 on his credit card which he didn't remember (which brought his card account into a positive balance.) Seems somehow at home her check ended up in his credit card payment envelope by accident. BUT THE CREDIT CARD COMPANY ACTUALLY CASHED IT!! A check made out to "Dr. Jones", and Visa has no problem cashing it. Freaking unbelievable.

There are actually professional check forgers that can use chemicals to blank out areas you've written in and re-write them to their specifications. They drive around and look for mailboxes that have the flag up the night before and steal the mail/bills. I somehow doubt this is the same thing that happened to you, but, it is possible to change the fields on a check after it's been written. At least that's what was reported on a TV News one evening not to long ago. I don't doubt it's possible.

Hope they are able to refund your money somehow. That Really sucks. Good luck.

Man that's bad news, I hope it works out for you!!

My only advice if you want to hear it is this, on future bill payments set up online banking with your bank. I've been using it now for a year or more, once you have all the bills that you want to pay this way in the system it's fast, easy and a lot more secure than putting them on a ledge or even in the mail box. I hardly ever write checks for bills any more it's just to easy to do it online. Well good luck, I do hope you get your money back.
