I WANT 3DFX BACK!!!!!!

Ah, my trusty Voodoo 3. Thou art becoming antiquated and I must replace thee. I've been really looking forward to some Voodoo 5 action, but since 3dfx is gone there is not going to be much support within a few months. So I begin to weigh the other options. nVidia seems to be the king of gaming right now so they'll have the best compatibility and support, right? WRONG!

Ever since the TNT2's became mainstream I haven't really liked nVidia chips. I had an Elsa Synergy II (TNT2 based) for about a month. I promptly bought a Voodoo 3 when Diablo 2 locked constantly from "issues on nVidia chipsets." I made up my mind then that nVidia can suck it and 3dfx was my card of choice.

I've put together alot of systems over the past year or so and have played with most of the Geforce line. But each time the performance just disappointed me more, I could get awesome performance from an $80 V3 or pay $130 for a lesser card, the MX. I was even able to play with a Geforce 2 GTS with the 64 mb of ram last month, I liked it ok, but it wouldn't even play half the games I wanted to without having issues of some sort! Every forum and support board I went to had dozens of posts about incompatibilites and issues from nVidia chips, but hardly any Voodoo problems out there. Coincidence? I doubt it. Just plug in a Voodoo, and it will almost always work, without a hitch.

However, since 3dfx has died, I wanted to give nVidia one last chance to prove themselves. I went out and bought a Geforce 2 MX. It was an ok price for a card bought locally and not on the net: $130. I brought it home and plugged it in, jumped on nVidia's site and downloaded the most recent Detonator drivers. I turn on UT and play for a few hours, tweaking the settings as I go for best performance, and eventually settle on 1024 res with 32 bit color. It plays well, about 55-60 FPS. But then it comes, LOCK. Thinking the lock was my computer not the video card, I default clock my Athlon to 750 and make sure all the bios settings are nice and conservative so I can have maximum stability to test my MX. I head for UT again, only to lock a few minutes later. Frustrated, I try out some of my other games, Red Alert 2, Klingon Academy. They all play ok, about what my Voodoo does. I'm starting to feel like I never even purchased an upgrade when they all perform the same as they always have with my Voodoo. I'm a MechWarrior fan, so I go to Microsoft and download the Mechwarrior 4 demo and play it. Immediately I lock again! Becoming fairly irritated I check the readme, "incompatibilites with TNT and Geforce based video cards, nVidia is working on the issue." I almost piss my pants. A brand new game, and the supposed KING of gaming can't even play toether!! Severely pissed that I sunk 130 bucks for NOTHING I head for UT and tone down the graphic settings more, I just want to be able to play SOMETHING. Within 5 minutes I lock again.

This, my friends, is why nVidia stinks. All they're concerned about is making the dollars, they don't give a crap about the quality of their product. You can quote me specs about the cards all day, but it doesn't matter, it doesn't change the instability or the incompatibilites. Let's say nVidia really IS working on all these issues. What do I have to do? Update my drivers every other day and hope my game will ever work or not?? That is unacceptable. nVidia is just like Microsoft, they release a new product and are already working on the bug fixes before it even gets in the consumer's hands, now THAT is a SHODDY product. I don't care if 3dfx IS dead, I'm buying a V5, it's a vastly superior product.

I too am sad to see 3dfx leave us. It was of course the poor management that killed them. Even in the end they screwed shareholders by gutting the company and leaving no value left. I love my V5 5500. I play all the current games smooth as butter with 2xfsaa. I will of course buy an NV20, but i would have rather have purchased a rampage.

I feel the same way...I had a TNT2 for a while and returned it in favour of a V3...

I havne't tried the newer nVidia cards, but I have tried a Radeon 64MB Vivo. Nice enough card....but man do the drivers ever suck...and knowing ATi as soon as the next gen is out what little driver support there is, will be gone....

Well written. I have a Voodoo 3000 PCI in my Dell (old system) What a great card! I really wanted to stick with Voodoo for my new rig, but with 3DFX going belly-up, there will be no new drivers released (I don't care what their press release says, they are going to hang their customers out to dry...and we all know it.)

The driver software that came with the 3000 is so easy, intuitive to use. My new NVidia card's software gives me headaches just looking at it. To be fair, though, I haven't used the new card yet (i.e. no games yet) as I'm still getting the new rig up and running. I'm really hoping to see an improvement with this new 32mb DDR card over my Voodooo 3000 with 16mg SDR. For what I paid for the damn thing, it should make breakfast tacos too!

I was going to get the V5000, and the very day I was going to the store to get it, I read on the net that Nvidia swallowed 3DFX. Read: from this day forward Voodoo is dead...no support. So I had to learn all new Nvidia terminology and start comparing 2,497 differnet manufacturers versions of the Nvidia card. You wanna laugh? I thought Nvidia made the cards, like 3dfx. So, I go to Bestbuy looking for an Nvidia card. Box after box...no Nvidia. When I asked the guy behind the counter where the Nvidia cards were, he looked at me kinds strange. It was very embarassing. To me, it's weird trying to find a card that best utilizes the technology made by some other company. 3dfx was "inhouse". Know what I mean?

Anyway. Good luck with your Voodoo5. If I were you (and I'm not..it's your choice and $$$) I wouln't buy it. Because like six months from now when the come out with DirectX 34, FSAA version 545.9, etc., you won't be able to take advantage of it because you won't be able to get a new driver.

Now, I understand your frustration with all the lockups and conflicts, but these can be worked out thru patches and updates. Yes, I agree that the damn card should work perfectly right out of the box and this obviously isn't the case...but what other choices do we have? I'm sincerely going to give my very first Nvidia card a chance. I hope I don't have lots of problems. I hope your decision works out for 'ya. Cheers!

As long as you don't use win2k in my opinion a Radeon DDR is the best video card you can buy. Gives up a few frames to the GeForce2 but it's much nicer looking. Excellent feature set and allround great card.

My problem is that Win2000 support is weak, and when Windows "Whistler" comes out, it's basically a modified version of Win2000...I plan to ditch Win98SE for Whistler the day it hits shelves....so I don't like this lack of Win2000 support by the Radeon.

Yea it is so sad to see 3DFX go away. I have a V5 and it has been very playable and without problems. It also handles an FSB overclock very well it ran on 120fsb while OCed@180.

I read post after post of this and that wont work and responces that sound like some sort of code. Use this driver for that from here and not here but make sure you didnt load this ect ect ect.

As it stands Im working on a combo of the latest whql/beta drivers and I hope it works.....I want my HSR!

This is why I'm glad 3DFX is gone. This and outwardly saying everything is doing great until they gutted the company. I was very close to investing in this company once, and was very fortunate not to have invested. Knowing the founders got shafted somewhat is a good feeling.

Upgraded from Voodoo3 to Radeon 32MB DDR...using the drivers that came with CD...

2D was a slight improvement over the Voodoo3 (which had really great 2D already) except for the shimmering problem with FD Trinitrons (I don't really mind it).

It plays all my games without any problems...NFS Porsche Unleashed looks really nice at 1280X1024@32bit color with FSAA turned on.

I'm running Win98SE.

I feel that 3dfx cards went downhill ever since the Voodoo 4 and 5, overpriced card with poor performence for thier specs, I mean the Voodoo 5 has two graphics chips, surely it should way outperform the GTS since it's got 2 x 166mhz of enhanced 0.25 micron chips..

Nothing worse than a zealot...well maybe a Junior zealot.
TOPIC OF THE DAY...NO CRYING/COMPLAINING. We don't care if you can't get your MX to work. Sure the V3 3000 is a great card but come on...that was like 1 year ago. A lot has changed since then (invented the wheel, little trip to the Moon). Please read the forum rules before you go off in a "I hate the world frame of mind."

I too used to love 3dfx. I switched to the geforce side when 3dfx stated "you dont need 32-bit graphics in games". WRONG, I need it. Too bad they didn't listen to what the gamers wanted instead of dictating to us what we needed. Dumb bastards.

Just to let some of you Members know that there are people here(I `m one)that has had happy gaming over the years with Nvidia cards,I too now use a Geforce2 MX card but have yet to run into any problems, this is not a flame of anykind just my own personal experience,I do ask myself now & then why can I get all my games working great & stable while others can`t?

Btw I was also a Voodoo owner at onetime(that also was stable for gaming) so I guess I`m now four for four on different brands stability wise.

I have the Radeon 32DDR and think it's fantastic. I run Win98. I don't have any complaints as far as the driver's go, but I don't play alot of different games either. As long as something runs Quake3 I'm in good shape.

I also used mine with Win2000 for a few months and never really had any complaints from that setup either.

On the other hand ATI isn't known for fantastic driver support. Let's hope they realize the position they are in now and step up to the plate. They have the $$$$ and resources to give Nvidia a swift kick in the as*.

I'm not against Nvidia, I'm just against no competition. Look what it did to Microsoft and Intel. Intel finally got some great competition and were now buying gig cpu's for less than $200. If amd hadn't of gotten their act together we wouldn't have seen that for a few years.

My two cents anyway.

3dfx are a bit like Apple to me, living on past glories and keeping production very much to themselves hoping to make bigger profits. their designs were actually made before their competitors but they had delays getting them to market, by which time the product cycle had superceded their chips. ho hum.

So what that the V5 won't have future support. The latest drivers are excellent, and are DX8 compatible. When do you suppose that the lack of support will be noticible?

My guess is when games optimized for DX9 hit, which I believe is almost two years away.

Why else should I (or gcliv) care about support?

Um... As far as I can tell that's the typical response of Best Buy employees when confronted by a mildly technical question.

If you asked the guy behind the counter where the printers are he'd proabbly look at you kinda strange. You don't talk to the people at big store...they know jack!

Occasionally one of the girls at the till will be cute or something, and you can look at her and smile (or look down her shirt), but you never ever ask the guys for any advice, or even where something is. Usually trying to explain what you're looking for will talk longer than actually looking for it yourself.

FordLorider:

I just posted my opinion, if you don't like it, don't read it. If there is any such rule about posting an argument/opinion intelligently and articulately, then this is a severely screwed up forum.

Wingznut PEZ:

You have a point, their are drivers now and they will last as long as the card is current technology, at least until the Radeon 3 with 512 mb of DDR ram comes out But what about Whisler support??

I do run Windows2000, is there really a massive drawback in the driver support for the Radeon??

I disagree about declining support.

Look at the Vortex2, it's still going strong after Aureal (as well as Diamond) went flop. The Voodoo5 has an advantage over them. 3dfx has open-sourced its specs, so unimpeded support by the community will continue (at least for Linux )
