Guys,

I am looking for a new 20"+ LCD monitor. I am using an ASUS 9800XT videocard, currently set at 1280x1024 on my Iiyama VM Pro453 (CRT/DVI).

I am looking for Big, Pivot functionality, Quick response (for occacional gaming), and possibly a USB hub. I do not use the monitor for viewing films. I would like it to be silver colored, but that's secondary.

My list currently is:

* Eizo FlexScan L885
* Samsung SyncMaster 213T
* ViewSonic VP201B
* Dell 2001FP

I am based in the UK, and as they are all very expensive over here, price is irrelevant.

Thanks in advance!

I just received my 20" Dell 2001fp last night, and I must say it is absolutely stunning. I was a little worried about what some on here have mentioned as a 'screen door' effect (or something like that), but I must say that the image is absolutely flawless. Zero dead pixels, also.

One other thing I was worred about was gaming at resolutions lower than 1600x1200 and how sharp the image would be, so I played some Painkiller last night at 1024x768. While the image was obsiously not as sharp and awe-inspiring at 1024 as it was at 1600, the image wasn't really blurry either. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that the image quality at 1024 on the 2001fp is still better than it was on my 19" MAG CRT.

The USB hub is also a great touch I highly recommend the 2001fp.

Well, only from experience can I recommend both Viewsonic and Samsung.. with the slight edge going to Viewsonic.
I hear those Dell monitors are quite nice, but have never used one, and I have no experience at all with the first brand in the list.

I wouldn't hesitate to go with Viewsonic, they are one of the top monitor makers in the world. just read a bunch of reviews, and if they are all getting rave reviews, just try and pick one with whatever extra it is you like, whether it be looks, USB ports, etc.

hope this helps

Viewsonic's LCDs, by and large, are among the worst quality of the bunch. While they were one of the leaders in CRT technology 5+ years ago, Samsung et al have gotten way ahead of them in the LCD game.

From those aforementioned monitors, though, I'd get the Dell 2001FP. The 213T is slightly old technology (it always takes a bit more for the best response times to come to > 17" LCDs.

Why are they so bad?

Well, for one, the Viewsonic and the Dell use the same LCD panel, so they're basically the same model, with the same screen door qualities.

The Samsung 213t would be my recommendation, with the Eizo being unknown. I'm sure it's good, but I've never heard of it.

The Eizo FlexScan L885 is the no. 1 20"+ LCD in the UK, according to PC Pro. It is your typical 20.1", 20MS, 250CD/M2, 500:1 Contrast, 1600x1200 Monitor.

It is a very expensive choise, but according to PC Pro, offers better performance than the Viewsonic, as well as the Samsung. I can't find a comparison review of these monitors, so am asking for opions.

I have the 213T and I love it. I've owned this panel for a little over a year and it has zero dead pixels. The colors are great and I would buy another in a second if nothing else out there was superior at the time.

I'd give it the nod over the Dell because it has the size advantage. This is my preference and I would only give the Dell the tilt if gaming was my absolute #1 priority.

I love my Dell 2001FP. I know you said price isn't an issue but the price of the Samsung 213T is absurd. $300 more for a slight size difference. All I know is there's no screen door sitting on my desk.

I have the Dell 2000FP. Although the response time is rated at 25ms I see no ghosting whatsoever.
I had a 15" LCD before. I can't even believe the difference in having a larger screen. It is truly awesome.

It's a matter of perception. I've looked at the panel, it's not bad, but sitting right next to a 213t, it just doesn't compete.

I have had the Samsung 213T for a little while, and i have to say it was worth every penny. Sure, its not the fastest display, but it is far better than the Samsung 900 ift i had before. No dead/stuck pixels. If i had a dual DVI card, i would probably buy another and have the 2 side by side

Where are you guys reading that the Dell 2001FP is the same panel as the ViewSonic VP201b ? I can't find it in fact-form in a review or anything I've read it a few times here on AT, but wanted to make sure it was true.

The wintel engineering group near me - I'm with distributed storage myself - recently evaluated a number of LCD panels. The nearly all agree that the Dell is the best value and overall best monitor at that size amongst the models you listed. The Samsung is also an excellent choice.

Samsung, Samsung, and Samsung. I can't speak well enough of them as far as LCDs are concerned.

I still haven't heard anything conveincing me one way or the other. The Dell is the cheapest, the Samsung the most advanced, and the Eizo the best rated (in the UK). I think it is goodbye to the Viewsonic, which supposedly have problems with quality, though they are cheap.

Any more comment beofre I spend my hard earned monies?

So far I'm not really sure... I'm thinking about sending this unit back for another one because the first thing I noticed out of the box was the it looked like at least one if not two of the cables had been used previously, so I'm guessing this unit has been returned before. Just after I posted this I also noticed two dead pixels...

The next thing I noticed was a heavy screen door effect. A friend of mine has this same monitor at work and he says mine looks unusual, almost as if there is a coating on the the screen. It is currently plugged into a 9600XT, using the DVI port, running in its native resolution/refresh rate. I tried running it in other resolutions and refresh rates but it still looks the same. The effect is most noticable on white or gray backgrounds.

If I get another and it has the same effect I'll probably return it and go with another big LCD or maybe back to a large flat CRT...

I just completed my call to Dell and after an hour on the phone with them the "best" they can do is sending out a new monitor in 5-7 days, but they can't even tell me which day it will come in, so now I have to haul the monitor to work everyday until they come, or I guess I could leave it at work and use my old monitor, either way it's annoying... Personally I can't say I'm too pleased with Dell. Hopefully the new model will perform better, but if not I think I'll start looking into CRTs...

The guys who reviews monitors for anandtech says the 213T is superior and I'd agree.. Dell has issues... and a 3.76 reseller rating which is atrocious..:Q

"Well, Vincent is pretty much on the ball usually. However, his analysis was a little less than a page while mine was an extensive analysis.

Anyways, yes if you read my Samsung 213T review i suggested that monitor over the 2001FP, but the 2001FP is considerably cheaper. Not to mention the multiple input sources, good warranty, and image quality. I think we are all preaching the same thing, no?

I RMA'ed the Dell the day I got it.

One thing I can say about Dell is that they sent my replacement monitor overnight, so I'm working with it right now.. I'm not sure about the screen door, so far I have either been getting used to it, or it's just not as noticable on this monitor.. I haven't found any dead pixels on this new monitor.

One great thing I can say about LCDs, especially LCDs this size, is the portrait mode. Rotating this thing around then switching to portait pretty much eliminates your scroll wheel. I'm going to give it another week and then decide what I want to do, right now I'm leaning toward keeping it... I'd like to get the Samsung that is basically the best LCD out there from what I've heard, but I can't see dropping a grand on it...

Last night I played some Far Cry in 1024x768 and City of Heroes in 1280x1024 and I didn't notice any problems with interpolation. Both of them looked great, colors were very vibrant and my only complaint in the end was the black level. I'm hoping it was just that unit and that this monitor performs better. I'm just very particular about the black level, for some reason it drives me nuts seeing something black in the game showing up as a dark gray...
