Same spot? Try cleaning it with baking soda, and make sure you keep their box clean. Some cats are particularly fussy about their box condition.

My brother and I went one time to get a dog. We came home with 2 dogs and 2 cats.

Getting two is more of a way to keep them company since over time they will get together and if you just get one it will usually annoy the hell out of you.

That's one of the reasons donkeys don't make good apt. pets.

I've never used Craigslist for anything. What is the official Craigslist policy on pets? As I said above, I need to find a new home for a cat. After this thread, I looked at Craigslist and saw many pet listings. But it says here that

Partial list of items for sale and services the advertisement of which is not permitted on craigslist...Household pets of any kind including but not limited to dogs, cats, primates, cage birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, fish. Re-homing with small adoption fee OK

So, are pets prohibited? How can they be prohibited, but a listing and a fee are ok?

You can't sell animals, but you can say "My dog needs a new home, give me $50 for his toys"

Even older cats usually won't fight when you put them together for the first time. They'd much rather just avoid each other.

I have lived with several cats over the years, and the females have tended to be some combination of flaky, withdrawn, neurotic and/or violent. The males have pretty much all been laid-back and fun to play with. If you want a pet that is companionable - more like a dog - I would recommend a male cat.

I don't necessarily agree with my good friend Perk that it's hard to get two cats to bond. My own experience has been that if they're laid back and friendly as individuals, they'll get along fine with other animals and befriend them. If they're shy or aggressive, they'll treat other cats this way.

Just go to a local shelter. Two cats are no more difficult to care for than one. While they don't NEED a companion, it's nice for them to keep mentally stimulated and exercised from play and socialized, which translates to a more stable and happier kitty overall.

Most cats never find homes. There are things like SAD/SAC which will include the spay and neuter but they are charging up to $85 a pet (not a bad deal, but not cheap for many).

I'd recommend 2 or 3 cats. While solidary sometimes. Cats do enjoy companionship.

If you get a kitten and play with it a lot with will grow to be a real lap cat. If you get a kitten and just throw it outside each night when you get home, then it will grow to run from you.

Cats should not be allowed unsupervised outside. Putting the cat out at night is a perpetual piece of owning a cat that has no merit with a spayed/neutered animal.

Honestly, gender is not a good predictor of a cat's behavioral tendencies. It's best to just pick a cat that's 6-9 months old and has already begun to develop its personality. You should be able to tell pretty easily at that point what they're going to be like as an adult. If you get a 6 week old kitten you never know what your going to get. Sometimes you can raise a cat just right, but it still hates you for no reason.

I've owned many cats and in both genders their personalities have run the gamut from super shy to super aggressive. Gender seems to have little to do with it.

My wife asks for a kitten almost every week after seeing cute ones available on craigslist. Now is a bad time tho, while our oldest dog is ailing, so I constantly have to fend off her requests.

Getting frustrated with her persistence, I told her yesterday I've spent a lot of time reconsidering the cat thing. She said "Really???", and I said yes I have, and the answer is still NO!

Its become a game - she finds new ways to ask, I find new ways to say no, lol.

Other than that, I think she enjoyed her birthday.
