I wanna get a kitty. Back home I had a couple and loved having them around, so I want to get one to live with me in my apartment.

What are some good resources for information?
Should I get two so that they can have companionship?
Male(s)? Female(s)?
I won't be de-clawing them, so don't worry about lecturing me on why I shouldn't Though I will get them spayed/neutered.

1. Does your apartment allow it?
2. Go to the local shelter / ASPCA / Humane Society they will have hundreds of kitties to choose from cheap.

Gender doesn't matter, age doesn't matter. Get one that immediatly warms up to you. You'll know. If you get two, pick ones that already get along.

Agreed. Female, they seem to behave better. No matter what make sure they are spaded/neutered.

Craigslist also works.

If price is your concern males are cheaper to get fixed but otherwise get 2 since one alone often gets lonely and will annoy the heck out of you.

Ditto this. I work outside(used to anyway), so I held out for abandoned kittens. I got my first cat that way, and after she died, I waited until I could find one under similar circumstances. I ended up finding a litter of 4, and my buddy from work took 2, and I took 2. That seems to be a good number to me. I originally didn't want both, but I didn't want to split them up either. Having the 2 is nice because their personalities are so different, and they keep each other company when I'm not home. Also, 2 cats isn't much harder to deal with then 1, so your not giving yourself more hassle.

I have an extra cat. He is quite loving and wonderful. A lap cat and will sit on your lap for hours. Pure bread himalayan, about 10-11 years old. I'm getting married and my fiancee is allergic. He is frightened of everything and when he gets frightened he gets a bladder infection.

Any takers?

My only concern is that if I go to shelter, the other animals that I don't pick will make me sad. I have a huge soft spot for animals in need

I'll try craigslist

I'll take your fiancee if you throw in a spare bag of kitty chow and a litter box.

Do you ship Parcel Post? If so, I'm in for 3.

The thing about the shelter, is you're probably their last hope. It's better to save 1 or 2, than none. I imagine Craigslist cats don't have too many problems getting placed.

Go in knowing that you can only help one or two and remember that if you didn't go in, they're ALL stuck there.

It's better if they have each other to play then roaming around the place looking for something to play with.

One thing not already mentioned is you really should get one in the 6-10 weeks old frame. This way they will imprint on you as mother and will be your friend for life.

Parents had a Siamese cat (the older breed) and some random mix breed one. Mix breed one died so they went out and got a barn cat (mix breed where they are mostly left to find for and feed themselves), first introduction between the two was the Siamese tackling the barn cat (large kitten at the time) and rolling a few feet across the floor in ball, and it wasn't play fighting. They eventually learned not to kill each other but it was constant tit for tat warfare between them.

On the other hand my sister had one cat, it was lonely and bugging the hell out of her so she got a second one. After brief attempts to kill each other they settled down and got along very nicely.

So be warned if you get one cat and decide later to get a second.

I don't know, both cats I've owned have been really affectionate and they were both over a year old when I got them.

Much, much harder to keep a dog in a apartment (I'm thinking the multistory ones) then a cat.

And dumb can be good, Siamese cats have long a bitter memories.

-edit- 15 years it took my parents Siamese cat to forgive my father for giving it a flea bath when it was a kitten. 15 years before it would let him pet it without getting bitten.

Definitely. Cats are very territorial, and they don't take well to interlopers. If you get 2, it should be at the same time, so they start off as equals.

That's what happened with my cats. We had one for over a year, then got a second. At first the older one was not happy at all, and they hissed at each other all the time and so on, but pretty soon they got used to each other and get along fine now. They still fight, but it's play-wrestling rather than trying to kill each other.

No joke, especially if they perceive another entity moving in on their rightful possession (you).
