As the title states, I would like a large screen tv I could also use as my computer monitor. When I say large I mean 54" + and when I say use as my computer monitor I mean WEB SURFING ( so it needs to be able to display text clearly)

Thanks so much...I have been looking everywhere and can't find much on this topic)

Thanks

Pick up a 720p or 1080p native HDTV with VGA inputs and you should be set.

Check the display resolution of the tv carefully and make sure it's somewhat standard.
I picked up a Sharp Aquos last year with the intention of doing the same thing and it didn't work that well for reading text. The resolution was something like 1388x766 and even tweaking my display settings didn't work that well. You'd probably need a 1080p model to ensure clear text.

Make sure the TV doesn't have a lot of overscan. It could really mess up your computer usage on it. For instance my DLP cuts off enough from the top, bottom and sides to hide the start bar and the close buttons on most windows. I can reduce the format to view the whole screen at once, but that's not exactly the best. Anyway...just read up on overscan.

You can probably find some good advice here too
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/

Is this for group presentations or something?

From using my own displays, I see the appeal of a large screen for watching videos or gaming, but web browsing on a large screen doesn't really appeal to me. Sitting at a desk with a couple standard monitors works a lot better for me for web stuff.

OMG, you have a 120" screen? Do you basically have a TV that doubles as a wall??

Well, it is the wall (for now)

I have a screen I will put up eventually and that's 102" so I'll be going a bit smaller then, but I've been too lazy to go out and get some black velvet to make a border and thus have not even bothered putting up my screen yet.

It's just a projector, not a 120" set. Panasonic AE900U ~$1499 AR

I had it poorly set up this summer and have since moved. I took some bad pictures of it down there if you want to take a look
https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/spmclaughlin/web/3%20Projector/AE900U/

Movies are the best. Games are pretty good (my main issue is where you put the keyboard / mouse to be comfortable) . Web surfing and text just feels odd imo.

I have the same plan - have the same Panny projector sitting here ready to hook up, but no screen yet. Trying to figure out the best furniture set up for me to sit comfortably for long hours and use a keyboard and mouse (probably have to be wireless) for gaming.

If I was a total nerd and didn't care what the room looked like, I think I would try to have a desk with wheels that I could move in front of my seating so I'd have a good surface for my mouse and keyboard.

It's so much easier to just watch a movie on it since all you need to be able to control is a remote.

Even if I did have a desk though, I don't think it would feel right for web browsing stuff. Giving up 3200x1200 for a larger screen size doesn't appeal to me

I'm wondering if a desk is the optimal setup though. One on wheels would be an issue because I want something sturdy with no movement. It may end up being the thing to get, another option a smaller but solid table. What sounds nice is a recliner with a built-in solid keyboard and mice holder that swings in place.

I don't have the money for that, I spent it all on my sound system

When I do use it with my computer, I usually end up having a tray of some sort on my lap with my keyboard on that and a medium sized box to my right where I can use my mouse.

Maybe something along the lines of a "breakfast in bed" tray would work well. I just haven't tried to hard to come up with the perfect solution because I get a similar viewing angle just sitting close to a regular monitor. I think the real benefit comes into play when more than one person is trying to view the same material. When I'm gaming, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference if I get a ~35 degree viewing angle sitting in front of my monitor or a ~40 degree viewing angle from the projector.

1080p on 37" isn't so bad. The idea of an HDTV as a monitor is you can combine costs. The first time I hooked it up, I decided to give my mom my old(er) 19". The downside, of course, you can only do one thing at a time (no tv while you surf, but P-I-P when you're watching tv and working during commercials). I use a chair and I have a sturdy breakfast tables for gaming. It's nice to have a wired mouse and keyboard to avoid lag. I wouldn't want to surf 100+" at 720p, that'd be really annoying.

My brother uses a "breakfast in bed" tray for his m/b mouse that you can sit on your lap on the couch. I has a bean bag kind of bottom of the tray that conforms to your knees, (or whatever and stays put and doesn't slide around. I personally use a desk as I do a lot of typing and require a stable platform...but the wheels idea has merit.

I have a 50" DLP that I hook my pc up to occasionally. Make sure you have wireless mouse n keyboard for that. But it isn't as amazing as it sounds...It's good for laying on the couch and surfing occasionally. I don't prefer to game on it. For straight PC use..I'd say a 20 - 24 inch is very good.

Well, if only solo DVD is what you want with more emphasis on the PC side of HTPC, a 24" would be about right (24" at 1920x1080 is a lot crisper than 37" at the same rez). Just be careful not to overwhelm the system with a big sound. It was almost comical watching DVDs on my 19"; these little guys with big booming voices through my 250W sub.

Too bad people don't think the same way when they get a big screen and end up using built-in speakers or a $100 HTIB

Guess it's priorities (and technology, I held out for 1080p). I started with the sound end and worked my way to the video side. It took a long time to build my system.

Not to hi-hack the thread, but it looks like YOyoYOhowsDAjello has close to the same speakers set-up that I do. I have the bigfoot and 750s up front, RSS300 on the sides and ELTs for the rear. I have a BenQ PE7800 PJ but don't use it for my computer. My screen it 92" also. I am considering building a HTPC just to screw around with.
Too many expensive hobbies .

Yep, I've got 550s for fronts and surrounds and the bigfoot of course (hard to miss that one).

SVS 20-39 PC+ taking care of the low end along with some bass shakers when I'm in the mood

This week I was playing around with some different stuff that I got for my parents off Craigslist (Axiom).

There are so many great products out there it's too bad most people aren't interested in it at all.
