I want a quiet hard drive!

I have a Seagate 120GB Barracuda ATA hard disk that I cannot stand! When the drive is in use (the heads seeking) it makes a clicky noise that I do not like. The drive works fine, just the clicky noise when the heads are moving is the only problem. It reminds me of the old seagate ST-225. I want to get a drive that makes no noise. I have had a few drives in the past that make no noise at all when the heads are seeking. Can anyone suggest a good, fast and quiet ATA133 hard drive.

Thank you!

You will get many mix answers, since user have their own experiences with "silent" drives. IMO Samsung's Spinpoint series are extremely quiet. The loudest drive I've come across is a WD Cavair, which makes that ticking noise, must be a common thing with all WD?

Clicky noise often means failing hard drive, even if it seems to work ok. Replace it (under warranty?). My seagate sata 160gb drive is very very quiet. It has no grindy noise like I hear with every WD and maxtor drive I've ever used.

Something must be really wrong with that drive or the way its mounted. Those 225's were coffee grinders! NO late model hard drive should sound like that.

Another vote for the Spinpoints. Looking forward to hearing that S166, not so much the low capacities. I have always liked the P series, very quiet.

I'll put in a vote for Samsumg Spinpoint drives too. I have two of them and they are VERY quiet.

What ticking noise? I have a WD Cavair and I haven't noticed such a noise. Of course, I don't really care if somethings silent or not. My computers far from silent and I still sleep in close proximity to it.

WD has been using the Caviar name for ages, so that is not really an indicator of much. For example, I had a 540MB WD that had the Caviar name on it. It was indeed loud, but lots of drives from that era were.

Yep same here, own a 160GB one and it's very quiet. It was a part of my silent PC build.

Do a Google search for AMSET. It's free acoustic management software for your HDD. You'll need a DOS boot disk to install it. It did wonders quieting down my HDD.
