Who makes a good P3 Tulatin Compatible motherboard that will let me have more than 512MB RAM? I was looking at the Abit TUSL2, but it's an i815 and is limited to 512MB. I prefer an Intel Chipset, but if there is a REALLY High Quality VIA or other brand chipset that doesn't have stupid Compatibility Problems I'd look into it.

I'm running a P3 866 (Slot 1) on an Abit BX6 R2 board now with 1GB Crucial PC133 ECC RAM, I want to keep all that RAM and move onto a P3 Tulatin.

You'll need a VIA solution, lets you run 1.5 or 2gb.. not sure which mobo is the best... which P3 are u looking for ? the 256 or 512k cache ? Also a P4 is much cheaper I think...

Or you could just get an AMD setup with a Shuttle board. That will allow up to 4GB RAM

I'm not too hot on VIA, after seeing all the crazy monkey business with the 4 in 1's and compatibility issues I think I'll pass. I'm looking at getting a 1.26GHz 512k (I think?) Tulatin.

I'm fairly anti-AMD, but I would consider getting one on a nice ALL AMD Chipset Board, but I'm not sure if there is one, I've never looked much.

<< Just curious, why the need for more than 512 meg? Running a server? >>

Wow, everyone asks me that.

No, I just like having hella RAM. Since I upgraded to 1GB from 512MB I've noticed how much snappier Photoshop and Visual Studio (Big Compiles) are, not to mention how fast EVERYTHING loads up, and I just don't want to go back.

I'd just bite the bullet and get a new P4 system, but I don't want to have to buy new DDR or Rambus, and I want to wait for SMT support on the P4s.

What OS are you running? I hope you're not running a 9x kernel, 'cause they choke with more than 512 MB - you start getting all kinds of strange errors like out of memory when you try to open a command prompt.

If you're running an OS with real memory management, then I'd suggest a dual AMD system.

I'm Dual-Booting WinXP and Redhat 6.2 - none of that 9X Crap in my house.

Is there a High Quality Dual Processor AMD Motherboard that uses ALL AMD brand Chipsets, etc? If I'm going to make the big jump to AMD Chips, I'm going to do it right and not run any of that VIA crap.

Agreed, the Tyans are the way to go... SMP boards are the only boards with ALL AMD chipsets on them anyway.

I've had more problems installing the stupid Intel inf files than I have with installing Via drivers.. - AMD rigs are just as easy if not easier in some cases to setup than Intels.. If you gotta get a VIA chipset, and are going to spend your money on a new CPU.. just buy an Athlon XP, get some kick behind performance, and save yourself some money in the process. about the compatibility issues - None... only possible compatibility issues i could have had are with the SBLIVE! but most people claimed problems on the 815 based boards as well as the VIA based boards.. so, no advantage for either chipset maker, there. Seriously, there is nothing wrong with Via chipsets, I could not be more pleased with my KT133A at home, and my KT133 and KT133A at work, they all run just fine, with no compatibility issues!

The Tyan boards are definitely the ones to look at, they're considered the most stable AMD platform bar none.

I have had mine for 9 weeks & have yet to have a single crash take down my system. I've had a couple stupid programs kill themselves, but overall it's the most stable system I've ever used, including my BX based P3.

They are indeed all AMD, & they have 64-bit PCI slots as well.
