I want my Ivy Bridge E

A little rant, but the wait for Ivy Bridge-E has been far, far too long. Now I understand that these chips take a long frigging time to validate since they're just the scraps from the servers/workstations, but not all of the features (particularly 2S compatibility) are needed for the enthusiast desktop versions of the chips.

I've been using this SNB for too long, and upgrading to yet another 4 core just doesn't tickle my fancy. "Upgrading" to a 3930K also doesn't seem to make much sense given that it's a power hog and about to be replaced.

All in all, a very boring summer for this enthusiast.

It was always expected to be. Haswell was the super CPU everyone was waiting for and it delivers what it was meant to but alongside the unfortunately poor thermal interface that IB had. In general CPU performance progress has slowed, your CPU will last longer than previous ones have. Its not going to be half the speed of next years CPU or less, that level of progress we haven't seen for 6 years.

I want it too because I want my cheap SB-E 6 core. Your title made me think of Dire Straits hahaha.

Its incremental at best. SBE at 4.5GHz will murder anything for a long time to come.

I sat on my 980x forever, but when someone that had to upgrade gave me an offer I couldn't say no to, I ended up on 2011 and haven't looked back since!

That i5 is a flop. Any CPU next to it will blow it away. i7 line.

i5 is a turtle race. After Haswell E , its another new CPU , next thing you know they selling 12core desktops................ which we all know will not happen. They need to make money off server side. gl

Dont expect Haswell 8 core to pop up when the new year 2014 comes. You will have to suffer and wait. There is no proof Has E will be 8 core ... Spring 2014.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was delayed to September just like Sandy E.

Then you flip out when you see its a 6 core.

Guys you want cores go to the server line....

Why not spring for a 8 core 5ghz chip from AMD

There are no AMD 8 core 5GHz chips. The fastest chip from AMD is the FX-9590 which is a 4.7GHz chip with a 5Ghz turbo boost. So it's really a 4.7GHz chip that will automatically run at 5GHz under certain conditions. Like my 3930k is a 3.2GHz chip but will run at 3.8GHz automatically when only one core or 2 cores are active and the others are in a sleep state, at least officially. I'd pick a 3930k over an FX-9590 any day of the week. I recommend that he wait for the 4930k 6-core and go socket 2011 if he really wants a 6-core chip.

Hey Dave3000. What do you think of the 1k 4960x coming Sept 11th ?
4930k has 12mb L3 cache. 4960x has 15mb L3 cache. I think Idontcare answered and said to get the 4960x because the cache is 15mb and also Ill be able to OC to 5Ghz ... gl

Im paying twice as much compared to 4930k.

For a Gamer, I'm still happy with my i7 930 @ 3.8 GHz .. It's doing the job perfectly. GPU matters the most.

Saying that, I already did one GPU Upgrade on this rig (From single GTX 580 to Dual 7970). When my GPU's aren't enough anymore, then it'll be my time for major upgrade. I'm putting in mind October 2014.

IVB-E is still boring - no PCIe 4.0, no DDR4, no SATA Express as far as I am aware. If you want more performance, why not upgrade those 680s to 780s? I doubt we'll have many PC games that use 6 cores fully in the next 2 years. Plenty of time to just sit tight until Skylake 6-core. If you got $ to burn, get a good sound card and/or speakers for the PC.

Sadly, the more I think about it, the crazier it seems that you are going to spend money on this kind of upgrade.

Considering what you already have(irrespective of how long you have had it for), where do you expect to see some noticeable gains, that won't leave you with Buyer's Remorse? :hmm:

Buyer's Remorse? What kind of enthusiast are you!? You're supposed to blow through money for the heck of it and enjoy that 10% increase!
