My stardock start 10 trial has ran out and now I'm stuck with the crappy windows 10 start menu. What are the other alternatives? I can't find anything. Only stardock start 10 which is paid. I really appreciate the help

Seriously? I hated Windows 8 "start menu" with a passion, but once they switched back with Windows 10 I have absolutely no qualms. I hate change too, but Windows 10 start menu is pretty slick overall.

Classicshell worked for me ( http://www.classicshell.net/ ). The funny thing is, I was fine with the windows 8.1 menu! In Windows 10 the start menu is extremely sluggish and takes 10+ seconds to search (and not find!) programs. I'm sure a fresh install would solve the issue but I'm too lazy right now...

Think I'll just stick with 7 until you guys get all the bugs out for me.

1. Press Start keyboard key. 2. Type first x letters of desired app. 3. Press Enter keyboard key.

1. Press Start keyboard key. 2. Type first x letters of desired app. 3. wait until "search my stuff" appears. 4. Press Enter keyboard key. 5. Browse file explorer for the .exe

Yeah, I don't get the hatred of the Windows 10 start menu. It looks nice, and basically works the same as the Windows 7 version.

As much as I hated Windows 8, I'm OK with the Windows 10 UI changes. It's like they integrated the good aspects of Android's UI into a desktop friendly package.

I've been using Classic Shell for a couple years. It worked great with Win 8/8.1 Pro. It works great with my Win10 Pro install.

You should try the free upgrade and install classic shell just to try it for yourself. Either way it will give you the option to use 10 later otherwise you will have to pay for it.

Start Search has always been flaky / intermittent since it debuted with Vista. I do Win+R and learned the executable names of the apps/utilities I use most. It's the most universal way that also works with XP.

iexplore [optional URL or -extoff for safe mode]
chrome [optional URL or -extoff for safe mode]
firefox [optional URL or -extoff for safe mode]

cmd
notepad
calc

charmap
mstsc [optional /v:hostname-or-IPort-number]
excel
outlook
winword
...and more.
