Works perfectly for me. Something is wrong with your installation.

I love it on my computers that don't have much on them. If you have a lot of games and programs installed it's a different story.

Run Windows PowerShell enter the command Get-StartApps | measure
if the number is greater than 512, your Start menu will be broken and unusable. Microsoft has been saying their working on it since release.

Yep, that's probably it. 612...

I have 6 years worth of stuff on my system and it works fine. I keep my start menu cleaned up so all the stupid "readme" shortcuts and such aren't cluttering up the place so I have under 300 items in there.

ClassicShell does the trick, Win 10's menu doesn't keep shortcuts I want on the menu, it just shows most frequently used programs and changes a lot and I'm not a fan of the tiles. Also if you want to edit the program's shortcut properties in Win 10's menu you have to launch it first then right click the launched icon and right click the icon inside the launched icon's menu whereas you right click in ClassicShell and pick properties, it's just a few of the nicks that bugs me about Win 10's menu (especially annoying when doing it on a tablet).

+10000 for ClassicShell.

I don't think most people would actually put 612 shortcuts on their Start Menu/Desktop etc.

I'm a gamer myself and prefer a cleaner looking desktop anyway, so my desktop is clean even on Win10, but what I do for any Steam, Origin games is you can just right click on the Steam/Origin icon in taskbar for games or to bring your games list up.
Favourites I list in Start menu tiles from A to Z, yes could be a pain if you have way too many games, but even in Win7 would not be a perfect solution or fix for that.

Linux has the best Start menus and wipes the floor with Win7 or any Windows OS you care to name, too bad gaming is not its strong point.
End of the day I can play and use all my games (quite a few installed)just fine with Win10 so don't see it as a "mountain" that some users try to make it into.

I use Linux as well, have done so for many years.

One thing I've learned over the decades, some users will always bitch about something even on simple Windows, some things never change.

Just a basic install of Windows 10 will leave you with over a 100 start menu entries. Some programs will drop upwards of 30 entries for all of their modules. Office 2007 had about 15. It can add up pretty quick, if you install a lot of programs.

It was never a problem with any other Windows version so I had a heavily loaded start menu on one machine that I upgraded from Win 7. That's where I noticed the issue. Some of my older laptops only have Office, browser and a few games. They should never have issues.

It's not a deal breaker, but Microsoft sure is taking their time about fixing it.

Hmm, that 612 isn't just 300 icons on my desktop (only 73, hah!) I actually uncheck the show desktop icons so nice blank desktop...

Installed programs = 337 with many 'multiple' e.g. a couple for .net framework, a bunch for MS SQL, etc... so it's not like i have 337 individual programs!)

So it's not as crazy as it might sound...

fresh 8, upgrade > 8.1 > 10.. I guess upgrade gamble is finally biting me...

Oh man do you remember what it was a like a couple years ago when 8 was introduced. I swear you and me were the only ones that gave it a chance.
The blow back was ten times harsher than what Win10 is getting now.

The main bitching back then was lack of Start button menu, now they got one in Win10 and they are still moaning, lol some things don't change with some people.

I've my front seat booked for the next chapter of complaints in the next OS .

Classic Shell seems to do the trick. I installed 10 tonight and within 2 hours my head was ready to fall off with the start menu.

Not only was it a complete mess but adding folders and shortcuts into the directories as many of the online guides say achieved nothing. I would create a folder but it would just not appear.

This maybe fine for the average Joe but not being able to organise your own start menu is a joke.

The sad thing is I was completely fine with 8 and 8.1 start menu and now, upgrading to 10, I need to use an alternate start menu to get the same functionality back. It shouldn't matter how many 'programs' i have installed, it worked in 8 and 8.1, now it's broken in 10 for me.

Yeah, I right click and add to start and nothing happens. Search for the program, "search my stuff" is the only option...

haha right on man. Oh well. You can't make them happy. We are creatures of habit.

EDIT:On a side note this did make me chuckle.
Do people resist change to that degree? Wow. How's programming your VCR working out for you ?

MS should just concede to users and restore the windows 7 menu system to their os's and be done with it. When I first looked at the 10 start menu it was much better than the one in 8/8.1 but still wasn't enough and required classic shell to regain the function I am looking for.

Forget Win7 Start menu which is crap compared to Linux SMs, you want the best then have a look at the ones on Linux Distros, now Microsoft should really look at those.

End of the day Win10 SM can be upgraded if Microsoft get their fingers out. I would like to see more options for tiles sizes on the Start menu, more options to divide them into listings etc, expanded tree tile systems, some ideas they could do.

That's how 7 and 8/8.1 worked for me 10 is more like

1. Press Start keyboard key. 2. Type first x letters of desired app. 3. wait until "search my stuff" appears. 4. Press Enter keyboard key. 5. Browse file explorer for the .exe

Yeah, start-menu search is not as reliable in Windows 10 as it was in 7 (never used 8.x). Sometimes it just stops working for x number of hours/days (not regular search, just the start menu search). Haven't really found a way to get it to work again other than just waiting and hoping.

If you want to add some startup parameter/argument to a program, instead of just right-click>Properties, you have to first right-click the shortcut in the start menu and select open the file location. This gets you to the actual .lnk shortcut. Then you have to right-click that and choose properties and put in your parameters. The start menu shortcut is essentially a pointer to a pointer to the actual file.

Also, search doesn't return some types of shortcuts, such as those for Steam games. They show up under All apps, but not when searching. If you want those games to appear in search, you have to manually create a .lnk and point it to the .exe.

I do like the actual layout and design though. Hopefully Microsoft will release updates to fix the bugs and add the missing functionality.

I removed the cortana search window from the task bar. And all I gotta do is click the start menu, then type and it automatically switches to the search. Its as good or better than the Windows 7 start menu.

I don't know if this is your issue or not, but I had CCleaner setup to clean the windows search by mistake, and this caused problems with Windows trying to rebuild the index every time after I ran CCleaner. Also, open indexing options, then modify and make sure your C drive is enabled. By default the search didn't have the C drive enabled in the index, and after I did that, and let windows build up the index, my problems went away. I never get a loading screen any more in the Windows 7 search after I indexed the C drive. You can manually select which folders on the C drive you want indexed as well. Or use the default settings.

Here is what mine looks like:

yeah, i've played with the indexing without luck... classicshell works instantly so I guess that'll do until I find the time to do a fresh install.

I think soon I will be switching to Linux. I only NEED windows for gaming and frankly its just been a pain for the past few years. I will play Fallout 4 and then move on to better things.

Why should I pay Microsoft 300 dollars to waste my resources and make my wonderful computer an unpleasant experience?

300 bucks? wut

I had to fix indexing on my system after the upgrade to 10, but I think that was mainly my fault. I had set up custom library locations in Windows 7, then changed them around to different locations and drive letters a couple of times, so when it did the upgrade to 10 there was plenty of leftover garbage I had never cleaned up. Whoops.

What version of 10 costs $300? Is that Windows 10 uber solid gold edition with Bill Gates signature?
