Okay, on the surface that makes sense, but in reality, less access to guns legally has zero impact on access to guns illegally. Black market guns aren't going away and are not going to be influenced by policy or government restriction.

With something that there's so many of, that is already contentious, not having a buy-back for at *least* the price purchased is only going to guarantee that this never happens. Almost everyone has a price, but just asking millions of people to surrender weapons that were purchased legally (and are quite expensive in many cases) and simply give up these weapons with no compensation? People who's weapons ownership is currently admitted under law and constitution? I can't fathom that ever happening.

You're fighting illegal gun ownership, which isn't going to listen to any of the measures you propose. The only way through it is through legal gun ownership. Putting the equivalent of a several hundred to multi-thousand dollar loss on legal gun owners is simply not going to pass vote.

To the extent that either party moves more towards its extreme wing, the middle, where labor lives, feels more abandoned. It'll be interesting to see what message the Dems put together to try and regain the populist crown. Their embrace of unfettered immigration hasn't really endeared them to the average worker, and free trade is a pretty touchy subject as well. Repubs are smart to at least pay lip service to putting the brakes on trade agreements that are being blamed for job losses.
