So I've wanted to get a handgun for a while now. Sort of for protection, but mostly for fun. A lot of my friends have them and we go target shooting every once in a while.

I want a 9mm as that's a fairly cheap ammo, but that's as far as I've decided. I don't have a set budget (yet), I just want to know some of the quality cheaper guns you guys would recommend.

edit: also, I'd prefer a magazine over a revolver

I would suggest against the S&W 9mm, I just got back from shooting it and the first shot is a half trigger pull and every other one it is a full one....just didn't feel right. I liked the Glock 9mm my friend had, though. If you want something for fun, get a Walther p22 pistol for target practice. Even my friend who I went with who only shoots his 9's and .38's said he was going to buy one for a fun gun to shoot.

CZ 75 family
Taurus PT92/99
Springfield XD (although I don't like how they feel - same with glock)
S&W M&P are supposed to be really nice.
there's lots more out there too though - these are on the cheaper end (price-wise, not quality).

I've been very happy with my Tauruses ( Tauri ? ) I've a .40 Millenium and a stainless_357.jpgmag Stainless Revolver.

Each were <$300.00 and I've been very happy with their performance.
The pt140.jpg took some adjustment after shooting my brother's Glock, but since then it's been great.

Thats a dime in the photo for size reference.

I have a High Standard .22 for snakes and "plinking".
Target shooting with a .22 is fun, cheap, and won't hurt your hands / arms like the bigger calibers will. you'll hurt because you've been shooting for hours rather than minutes

Personally I like the S&W M&P because it fits my hand really nice. Recommend handling an assortment at your local gunshop and take it from there. Have fun!

Best advice its to try each gun in your hand. These days all of the major manufacturers make VERY reliable pistols (generally. But if it doesn't fit you right, you won't shoot it right.

That being said, I like the CZ75

I am going to have to go with the Glock or Walther P22 (if it's just for fun) because that gun is just plain fun and talk about cheap ammo!! Also, don't forget the mob's gun of choice was .22 for a long time. For self defense it's not as powerful as a .40 or .38 but don't be fooled a .22 can definately kill a person especially since it is so accurate.

Just pick up a Glock 19 and be done with it. It's a great beginner's gun. There is no external safety to fumble with. Every trigger pull is the same so you don't have to think about long and short pulls. No hammer to cock or get stuck on a shirt if you need to draw and use it in a defensive situation. Just point and click!

I'm in the same boat. Unless I totally hate the way it feels, I'm really looking at the Springfield XD-9.

Before I buy anything, even though I'm really set on the XD-9, I'd like to hold some in my hands. Unfortunately, the closest gun shop/range that is open to the public is four fucking hours away. Wtf?

My local range has several nice guns to rent, $8 for a half hour, very economical. I rented a M&P 9mm, and fell in love with it. I will be picking one up in the next few weeks, and just a reminder, the S&W guns have a $50 rebate, plus 2 free mags. Go test out several guns, spend some money and get one that feels great. Each range has almost every gun you're looking at, so pick each up, see how they feel in your hands

9 times out of 10 shooting someone with a .22 is just going to piss them off.
Don't make a decision based on what people online say. Go to a range that rents guns and fire the ones you are interested in. To me, the Glock's grip angle is terrible and just doesn't seem to be a natural position to shoot, but others say it helps for quicker follow up shots.
It may help the person that has never fired a gun before, but I just never liked Glocks.

I personally am not a big fan of 9mm. I prefer .40SW and .45ACP. That being said, I carry a Springfield 1911 while at work and on the weekends I carry a Springfield XD .40 Service.

And if the cost of ammo is a concern, then this isn't the thing to get into since ammo is only going to go up. If you have an Academy sports in your area, they are the best price wise for target ammo. I love the Monarch stuff. Never have had a problem. I put it on par with WWB.

9/10 shooting someone with a .45 will just piss them off...

Handgun cartridges aren't great when it comes down to stopping someone. A .22LR can be just as effective as a .45, shot placement is king, not caliber.

If you're dead set on a semi-automatic pistol, then the Smith and Wesson M&P series gets very high marks from me. I own an M&P that is chambered for .40 S&W and I'm very happy with it as a carry weapon. A new pistol will be in the $400-$500 range. I also really like the CZ 75B and the CZ 2075 RAMI (the RAMI is smaller and would make a nicer carry piece).

That said, if you don't intend to carry and you will be target shooting mostly then I strongly recommend a revolver with at least a 6" barrel that is chambered for .357 Magnum. You will get better accuracy and any revolver chambered for .357 Magnum can also fire .38 Special (which is less expensive). A used Ruger Security Six can be found for about $300 and it is essentially impossible to wear out a Ruger revolver.

I'm biased since I started out with revolvers, but I still believe that if you only have one handgun, a revolver is difficult to beat. No safeties to worry about, if a round is a dud you just pull the trigger again instead of having to clear it like you would a semi-auto, you have the option of single-action if you want it, and most (note, most, not all) people are more accurate with a long-barreled revolver than they are with a semi-auto.
