Proof or shens. I'd like to see someone make a shot with a .22LR at 300 yards, as there is a 10-11 inch drop at 150 yards. Plus, I want to see a turkey with 6 layers of clothing.

Rinky do

200+ yards aren't too bad with a semi-auto. Especially when you are shooting down into a sand pit and can just walk the rounds on target

I would never choose a .22LR for self defense over a handgun (well at close range anyway). But a .22LR is better than nothing, and plenty powerful enough to get to the important parts that need to be hit.

I prefer capacity over caliber though. Bad guys rarely come in ones.

Wow, great link. I'll have to use that later whenever we have SHTF discussions and people start making fun of how I would consider a .22lr rifle with a couple bricks would be very sufficient.

EDIT: People especially made fun of me during hte zombie discussions.

Well the Mossad and Seals have used Ruger MKIIs...

It's subjective, I would assume, but for me it's Springfield XD(tactical model... 5-inch barrel) above all else. Above, Beretta 92s, Sig P22x, Glocks, CZs, HK USPs, Rugers, you name it. I'd choose Springfield XD. Even if I could get any one of those for free I'd choose the XD. The combination of the trigger and sight radius of the XD have resulted in the highest accuracy at the shooting range for me. If I were going for the looks, though, I'd choose HK USP or Sig P226.

Now, have you tried the Sig X5 models?

No, I have not. I had to look it up. Looks awesome. Am I reading this right? 5" barrel instead of the usual 4.4, is it? That's hot.

Its based on the 226. A couple different models. Barrel width is up as well. Probably some other things I don't remember. Europe has the X6 model with a 6" barrel.

A buddy has one and as many of us say, its one of the few that makes anyone a better shooter.

I can't justify or afford the price over a regular 226, but take solace in the fact I shoot my regular 226r better then he can his x5 competition. (I got a benelli supernova and remington 597 and still spent less then him that day).

Why does everyone recommend the Glock 19 (compact) over 17? Do all of you carry?

Gotta agree. Best 9mm available for the money (IMO).

But I know an FFL selling HK P7 9mm's for $599, which is a steal, and by far the best 9mm handgun ever made.

fits the hand better (at least for me), uses the same mags, better concealability.

Are you talking about SCP? Steve is a great guy. Great gun too, but I can't get them here in Cali. I settled for a smith and wesson m&p compact.

sygyzy: Unless you have enormous hands, the 19 is still large enough to be comfortable, unlike their baby models. I stll consider al the glocks lego bricks. I respect the guns, but I hate the grip and the double trigger.

I am talking about SteyrAUG, from AR-15.com. He sells a lot of class3 stuff, but is selling the HK P7's to help out Cavalry arms and the raid they had on them by the ATF. $50 from every purchase is going to cav arms.

This is definitely the case (for the P7, not for the Glock but Glock doesn't fit me well).
I have a P7M8 and it is, with out a doubt, the finest 9mm I have ever used.
The other 9mm I can recommend is the Sig P228 (or the P229 now, I think that the P228 is LE/Military only now)

As for concealable, the XD compact in .40 SW is remarkably accurate and fits my hand pretty well.

Good luck and get a lot of range time, nothing like proficiency.

I own three handguns. A Hi-Point C-9 9mm, a Beretta Model 70 Jaguar .22lr and a Firestorm (bersa) mini 9mm. I will be getting a .45 sometime in the future as $$ dictates but I don't know what brand yet. Maybe a Glock???

I like all of these guns. The Beretta has a very light trigger pull and is a dream to shoot. It was also free since I got it from my Grandpa and ammo is CHEAP.

The Hi-Point was a spur of the moment purchase. I got sick and tired of hearing all the nay sayers (most of which do not own one) and figured for the price (I paid $137 out the door) I had to see for myself. The dealer has sold lots and only had one come back with a problem. It is big, heavy and ugly. It will jam a lot until the magazine springs and the follower wear in a bit but it is a great first handgun for someone that doesn't have much $$$ to spend. It makes a great truck/tool box/first time handgun. It has a lifetime warranty as well. I highly recommend for those on a budget but there are better handguns out there for sure.

The Firestorm is great. I think the Bersa/Firestorm (these are basically the same guns) are the best kept secret in handguns. They are inexpensive and are reliable. My dealer swears by them. They sell at many places for just over $300 new. I love the grip and the 13 round capacity. Plus they aren't too big and can be concealed without much trouble.

The Bersa Thunder 380 Concealed Carry is a nice choice if you want .380. I would look at some of the smaller 9mm guns and 'try them on' for size at a local gun shop and see how they feel. I really prefer 9mm as the smallest caliber for self defense but a .380 that you have with you when you need it is better than the 9mm or .45 you left in the car because it was too big to carry.

Now that I think about it, the more I look at the .380CC the more I want one. Once you start buying guns you can't stop!

Glocks are plastic kid's toys, just kidding Glock fans, personally I own quite a few guns myself and have to say I bought an XD subcompact in 40 cal. last year and have to say it is by far my favorite best shooting gun to even include many more expensive guns that I own including Glock. From the first time I shot it there is just a natural fit and shot placement came easy with little to no practice. Also i did a lot of research on the safety system and this is a safe firearm as far as accidental discharge by dropping unless both the grip safety and trigger are pulled, otherwise after looking at the internals and how it is designed there is virtually no way for an accidental firing. This is of course just my $.02 but I highly recommend the XD line, but you should as others here have recommended go to a range that rents guns and try a few and decide on whatever suits you and that you are comfortable with and don't necessarily go with what's popular with most folks and the industry i.e. Glocks, just as many years back after the movie Lethal Weapon the Beretta model 92 9mm was made very popular although there were many better guns out there, not trying to incite a Glock vs. XD war here as this is all just my opinion and this topic is likened to Ford vs. Chevrolet but just go try both and others and then decide.

CZ75 family

Make sure you try it out first because everyone has different paws. One plus with the CZ is the availablity of their .22 Kadet conversion kit. It makes practicing super dirt cheap and you still get the same trigger and feel as the 9mm version. Other guns have a .22 kit option also. The CZ is very nice and is a decent price. I have run several thousand rounds through my 75b and have had no problems.

I just bought a Hi-point C9 ghetto blaster. It's my first handgun and I wanted something cheap to start off with. If I like plinking and plunking with it I might look at something a little nicer. This was a good way for me to get into the sport and I didn't have to spend a ton of money.

I'm going to have to agree. I'm an XD fan myself, but I need to shoot it more to be sure. I've rented many guns and found the XD to be exactly as he described. I've shot 3 different Glocks and never liked them... but my brother does.

You just need to go to a range that allows you to rent, ask a lot of questions and keep switching out guns until you find one that just works for you.

For me it seemed to be the XD, looks like for many it's the Glock.

I want a 9mm as that's a fairly cheap ammo, but that's as far as I've decided. I don't have a set budget (yet), I just want to know some of the quality cheaper guns you guys would recommend.

edit: also, I'd prefer a magazine over a revolver

I'm going to recommend what i carry as a side arm, the Sig Sauer P226, mine is chambered for 9mm ammo but you could get it in .40 or .38 if you'd want that.

It's a nice gun and selected out of more than one thousand guns, among the first failures were Glocks, after the first round they were all discarded.

After a week the final battle came down to the P228 and the P226 and the P226 was more versatile (it can shoot black tipped rounds and C gas bullets.
