Im looking to get a laptop. I will use it for watching movies online, doing online baking and other online stuff and listening to music. I won't do gaming. Can someone tell me please which laptop brands are worth buying. My budget is between 1000-1500 CAD.

I wouldn't think you need to spend anywhere near that amount for a laptop that does not need a graphics card.

None of the things you need your laptop to do are very demanding.

Since you have the budget you should get an SSD.

Other than the SSD an i3 should cover it, maybe get an i5?

Maybe spend some money on a nice screen. The biggest issue with cheaper laptops is a poor quality screen.

I just bought a laptop that I find amazing for 650 USD.

It sports last year's i5, a GTX 1050 Ti video card, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, a M2 SSD drive and an IPS FHD screen. The thing boots up in 4 seconds! If you need more RAM or more storage there are easy access doors covering upgrade bays for both.

I'd suggest one for you if it were not for a few drawbacks, namely:

1) There is no internal optical
2) The display has a nice viewing angle being IPS but the NTSC color gamut is under 50% so in some ways the display is terrible. I don't care because most of the time I'm docked to a nicer display.
3) You really don't need the video card
4) Build quality is just okay

Really you could get away with a 350 USD i3 laptop if you were not fussy about the display.

Stateside Staples has this for $329.99:

HP 15-bs062st 15.6" Laptop Computer 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i3, 1TB SATA HD, 6GB DDR4, Windows 10

The display is only 1366x768 and is glossy which I can't stand but it is a lot of laptop for the money.

How close to the border do you live?

i don't want to usurp the thread but, anybody knows of a SILENT laptop to do light work?
Meaning no annoying fan, and coming with an SSD, 128gb would do, 13-14" screen.
thx!

There are some tablets that are fanless and perfectly quiet. I find my laptop to be plenty quiet while doing "normal" activities like surfing, however it does get quite noisy while gaming. This is ideal IMHO because it is the best of both worlds, quiet most of the time and powerful when need be, at the expense of a little noise. Generally a newer a laptop will consume less power and be quieter than an older model with similar specs. What do you plan to use the laptop for?

If a laptop is always quiet it is not going to be very powerful computing wise...

i'm planing to use it for work (excel), internet banking, and sometimes watch movies or video on youtube but it is not necessary. I travel and i carry the laptop with me. i do not really trust atoms, celeron or pentium CPUs.

Something weird was going on with that second link in my last post. It got redirected.

"Core M" is not an atom, Celeron or Pentium. It is a specifically designed low power CPU made to be used in fanless applications. You are not going to find a full speed chip that is fanless because of physics. A full speed chip is going to consume more power which will generate more heat which will require a fan.

Fanless architecture
MacBook was built for virtually silent performance. Its processor runs on just 5 watts of power, which generates less heat and eliminates the need for a fan to cool the computer. Instead, the logic board is seated on an anisotropic graphite sheet that helps disperse any heat. So you won’t hear a thing while your MacBook is hard at work.

Only Apple can do it? i hope not ?

i found this reply which sums up my thoughts actually :

"Re: Fanless laptop with backlit keyboard

For a bunch of people who think they're smart, the engineers and marketing execs in the computer industry sure are missing what is a glaring opportunity. Instead of using the new low power consumption processors to make fanless laptops, they have limited their market to more powerful tablets. They are completely ignoring a huge market: end users who want quiet, fanless, fully functional laptops.

Whom ever catches on, and uses the 8th gen intel, or Ryzen 7 processors to produce a fanless machine, with a 15 INCH SCREEN, backlit keyboard, and multiple usb ports, will corner the market and make a fortune.

All it takes is a simple google search for 'fanless laptop' to realize how many end users are searching for a traditional laptop that is fanless, and silent. We have tablets for extreme mobility, and that's great. What we're looking for is a fanless desktop replacement. Clearly, the technology exists to produce them. Engineers and execs need to open their eyes and realize that the market is craving this kind of machine."

It is a bit odd that you can buy a fanless micro PC (NUC sized) or even up to a 45 watt fanless heatsink for a desktop but nothing much for a laptop beyond the 4.5 watt Core M.

Were I to guess as to why I'd say that the issue with the laptop is, well, the lap. A mini PC or desktop can get all hot but no live person will ever touch one. A laptop designed to be literally in a lap would need to stay cool to the touch. A big hot heatsink is a comfort and safety issue.

Laps not withstanding, it is also a matter of space inside the case.

wow this thread has gone over a lot of topics i would like to buy another few laptops too. i usually just hit up ebay check for 8th gen laptop or 7th gen laptop buy the nicest cheapest one they have for buy it now.

but.. this time why not throw a few bux extra and try to get mx150. ive always wanted to buy a laptop with good gfx card this will be a bad one but leaps better than on board.
the acer model A515-51G looks good. I have always thought of acer being fast / budget but still decent build quality. So my only requirements are can play some games and hopefully not glossy screen, The cpu doesn't matter as a i3 7100u seemed fine with tasks mostly.

budget 300-450?
