Learn VB. There are a lot of premade PHP things you can get though, such as pHpBB or OSCommerce (see link in my sig), pretty much all they take is some setting up on your server and basic configurations... not much code editing involved.

I thought PHP was more on the side of C++ for web.

PHP isn' that easy because of the added thing such as setting up a server for it to work. But what you can do is try to see if there is a free hosting site suport PHP for you to learn, therefore you can bypass Apache & database setup.

I suggest PHP and MySQl web development by Luke Welling, and someone else I forget. It's really very useful, other then that webmonkey has a couple tutorials and php.net has all of their online documentation for free. good luck. i built this in php. (my first big php project) It was really easy, took about a week to put together, and still working on it.

Bro, you asked here as well. Were you not satisfied with the answers?

Personally, PHP isn't the way to go as far as Web Site Design. Like it was previously said, it's more for backend programming. The work you do in PHP will seldom be seen in images and layout to the end user. If you want more Web Design, you should learn to use programs like Adobe Go Live, Dreamweaver, and master image editting programs like photoshop, fireworks, illustrator and the like.

YOu're kinda limiting yourself there. I don't write PHP, but I do have perl scripts that automatically generate images and change the layout of the page based on the aspect ratio of the image.

True...but does the perl script actually assist in the design? I was answering in the sense that he was asking to Design websites. Now, if you want a strong backend, then PHP, ASP, .NET , SQL, CGI, etc programming is what to learn. Although these programs can help with the layout of the site, they can only manipulate existing objects, not necessarily create objects with no prior input.

And Enraged, I still stand by my original post in the prior thread. Good luck.

Get "PHP and MySQL for Dummies."

It's a great "starter" book, and comes with source and binaries for *nix and Winderz (Apache, Mysql, and PHP4).

List price is US$24.99.

Good Luck

Php is interpreted making it more suitable for sites because the interpreter is actually put right into the webserver and many many built in functions and very powerful. There's no fork etc... Multiple invocations. e i e i o.

The book I read at first was Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL by Kevin Yank. I found it easy to follow, but I had a little background in C++ and its pretty similar. The online docs (at php.net) are a great place if you just need a function that does something and the user contributed notes are )(*@&#$ great especially if your learning. You can search the site from the php.net homepage. Search under documentation if you looking for how to do somethign. It's better than the function search.

If you have an extra box, setting up a server to test stuff on a lan is really easy with RedHat 8.0 and the Red Hat Network to download and install packages for you.
