What's a good one to get to start?

I borrowed my girlfriend's for a while while we dated but I recently gave it back, but I really want to buy one of my own to learn on. Are there decent cheap starter ones? And if so, what should I start on (the viola or the violin?)

Thanks!

Dude, you live in Hillsborough now?

If you want to learn the violin the best place to start would be 15 years ago.

Why?

Only in Hillsborough until I find a new place to live. I want to move back to Piscataway, just not sure where. It has to happen SOON though. I don't care where it is, or how much it is, as long as its quiet.

Go to a music store that offers instruction and ask someone.

Oh, and I feel sorry for your neighbors. The only thing that sounds worse than someone learning to play an instrument using a bow is someone learning to play the drums. Sax/trumpet players come in a close 3rd

Everyone I know who plays the violin started at a very early age. I guess it takes a long time to become good at it.

I live in Hillsborough, in the vicinity of 206 & Triangle Rd (near Lowe's, Wawa, etc)

I would only play at my friends house. I'm not like that.

Yep. I still want to try. And I'm VERY musically inclined ( I play 5 instruments decently, and piano really well )

QFT.

Started playing at age 5. Had a natural talent but no work ethic. I never wanted to practice and I got distracted easily as a kid.

You can get a bridge damper, pretty cheap and they work well, I used to practice in my dorm room without any complaints.

Which should I start on? The viola or the violin?

If you play piano "really well" you'll likely have an easier time reading music for the violin than viola.

I wouldn't listen to anyone that says you should have started x years ago. It's never to late to learn to play a new instrument.

The viola burns longer

Man having the ability to play a violin would be so awesome... but I'm afraid I'd be no good at it Never played an instrument or took any kind of musical courses, dont know how to read notes or tabs or anything and I'm 22 Who knows I might still try it later on in life...

I agree with this. Also, the violin as a more popular instrument will have more resources available to you. Plus violins generally get the better music.
