I am building a new system in a couple days and I have a very hard decision to make.
I need to decide rather to build a Northwood system or an XP system.
I have seen the Athlon XP in action and I know what it can do, this thread should only be about one thing, overclocked Northwood numbers.
Everyone that can please show me some benchmarks, i.e. 3d mark 2000, 3d mark 2001, Sandra 2001 etc.
If I build a Northwood system it will cost atleast $100.00 more than an Athlon XP system that I am thinking of buying and if it just barely outperforms it, it would not be worth the extra money for the Northwood.
Now let the benchmarks begin.

What the heck is 3dmark going to tell you??? That is mainly vid card dependent and my non-gaming system p41.8@2.52ghz w/ GF2 pro will have a bottleneck at vid card....I get 5200's w/ latest dets (tested at 2.4ghz but I don't thik it will change much)...

sandra cpu: 4796/3052

sandra multimedia: 9839/12124

sandra memory: 2598/2596

all sythetic test though....

I benchmark using dvd to divx movies...my new p4 beat my old 1.4@1.5 tbird in encoding of a 1:57min Gone in 60 seconds....2:44minutes compared to 4:10minutes...The lame encoder was quite a bit faster as well though I didn't time it the first time...

I also benchmark using a cadd file I have had to render for a year and a half...haven't tested that until I do the quadro hack on my geforce2 again to make it apples and apples again

Also...are you only looking at a rdram p4 setup??? Even so that 100 dollars more is a bunch of crap....

asus p4s333 board = ~112.00 shipped (where I bought it)
p4 1.8a = ~206 shipped (newegg)

total of 318.00

most power supplies should be able to stay, especially with asus ez plug system, and the ddr can stay...

So tell me where you are going to get a 2000+ xp w/ hsf and a decent mobo to get the memory scores of the overclocked asus boards??? oem 2000+ will cost 219 before shipping then add a 20-30 hsf and then 10bucks for s&h and that is 260 for chip alone...So where are you going to get a board for 58 bucks f decent quality...Smells like a big pile of FUD...

remember any 1.6 or 1.8 that gets to 2.2ghz (which should be both at least) will equal it in performance as well as the 1.6a most likely having better numbers the typical pc800 rdram...

Duvie - you're neffing.

Right now, I am putting together my P4 1.6a. I already have an XP 1900 running@142MHz FSB. Since I run SETI, I'll get to compare the 2... But from what I've seen reported for the P4s and based on the SETI times on my XP, it takes a Northwood OC'd to over 2GHz to equal the times of my XP running@1.7GHz.

I guess the bottom line is price/performance and exactly what you plan to do with the rig.

$100.00 more than an Athlon XP system that I am thinking of buying

Does that look familiar? If not read my first post again, notice the "that I am thinking of buying" part?
You have no idea what Athlon XP system I am referring to, for all you know I could possibly be getting a discount on the Athlon XP system.
I also stated in my first post that this post was for benchmarks, "this thread should only be about one thing, overclocked Northwood numbers." Not prices ok, for me, I know what Athlon XP system I am referring to and you do not.
And for the 3d mark thing I will be able to tell alot, I am not going to compare your Northwood and GTS to a XP and a GeForce 4. I know what I am comparing and I can tell the difference.
I am not planing on ordering anything off of the internet.
Bottom line, I just want to know what outperforms what, what I am trying to say is, if the overclocked Northwood just slightly outperforms the XP then I will go for the XP because for me at my local shop where I buy parts it will be $100.00 more.

BTW,
Lose the attitude.

Mainly gaming and then some 3d apps like Gmax and just a normal everyday system
I must say it is a hard decision. I would definitely want Rdram if I went P4 so I could have a fast memory subsystem, that would be nice.
Thanks for all the replies everyone

Well if you can get an athlon xp (1900 or better) for 100 dollars less then my price I listed above...Let me know...I would seriously but one. I look prior to getting p4 nkowing I need in each instance a new mobo and a new cpu/ hsf...The p4 1.8/ asus p4s333 was cheaper then any athlon 2000+ kt266a/ xp333 setup...

Sorry for the attitude....It seemed like you were trying to be objective with the thread but I sensed a hint of bias for the xp...may have been my mistake...I came form an athlon and would gladly build another when the price/ performance surpasses my 1.8@2.52....I know an athlon 2000+xp is about qual to a p4 2.2ghz, so either The athlon needs to come out a little faster or actually be able to oc it without any extreme measures. I have never had good luck ocing athlons. If I did I am doubtful I would have left...

I'm using an MSI 645 Ultra with a 1.8a at 2.52g(18x140fsb).

I'm running the stock HSF and Crucial DDR at 350mhz(cas 2.5, normal timing to run at that speed)

Some benchmarks at 2.52 gig
Sandra 2002
memory scores....2547/2549
CPU multimedia...9933/12119
CPU arithmetic......4721 1502/3087
3Dmark2001se .....8283 (GeForce3 ti200 at 220/500)

Some benchmarks at 2.4 gig
Sandra 2002
memory scores....2447/2426
CPU multimedia...9456/11528
CPU arithmetic......4502 1430/2938
3Dmark2001se .....8090 (GeForce3 ti200 at 220/500)

Well if you can get an athlon xp (1900 or better) for 100 dollars less then my price I listed above...Let me know...

Last month, Newegg had a special which I found out about here, with all sorts of "refurbished" XPs for sale. I missed the $112 XP (either 1600s or 1700s) but snagged a 1900 for $165. I'm currently running that in my Epox 8K7a and slapped the 266 T-bird 1.2 that was in the Epox, into an MSI board (not a good place for it 'cause I really do need that 133 FSB and this MSI is flakey with that).

So... if you're lucky, you CAN get a good deal on a higher GHz XP.
