After screwing around with all the foo-foo frilly, fancy teas and tea balls, we keep going back to good old Salada Original Blend Black Tea. Priced right, tastes perfect and always consistant.

Oh, and thanks for reminding me. We ate at Hometown Buffet recently, and I noticed their tea tasted just as good, so i asked what kind it was. Turned out to be Royal Cup, which I never heard of before. Now that I found where to buy it, I don't have to sneak theirs out of the restaurant.

BTW, I don't think there's any caffeine in green tea, or not much anyway.

If you're not seeing a quality difference between Salada or Royal Cup and a loose-leaf then you're doing something wrong. I'm guessing your calling them "foo-foo frilly, fancy teas" probably shows you were skeptical and biased in the first place. I'm not faulting you for this; to each their own. There's a huge difference in the cup if you buy a quality loose-leaf and brew it properly. A lot of the loose-leaf nonsense you get in boxes at the store are very low grade and the quality is little better than your average tea bag.

There is a fair amount of caffeine in green tea, but it's usually roughly half of that of black tea, and probably around a quarter of that of your normal 6oz cup of coffee.

We keep going back, because it's so much more convenient. Taste-wise, I'm spoiled by Salada. It's always the same, and no aftertaste, which isn't true for the loose leafs we've had.

Incidentally, I'd like to start drinking whisky in addition to beer. Any recommendations for me?

I have a couple of boxes here....

can't tell you what brands coz they're labeled in chinese or korean.

majority of them are either straight green tea (which I like), green tea blends, and other types such as rose or jasmine or persimmon.

Thanks.

AFIK, tea has less caffeine than coffee and coffee has at least the same amount of, and possibly more, antioxidants as tea.

The longer you brew tea the more of the bitter chemicals you extract so:
Only brew tea for no more than three to four minutes for black teas, two to three minutes for the other types.
Do not double brew tea.

To find teas you like, go to a tea shop and try the different teas offered.

Preheat the tea pot and tea cup.

I like a nice earl grey with a little milk in the morning for when I can't get a good cup of coffee at work, it works decently well energy wise so long as you use good tea that can brew for a little while in a nice roomy pot. The lipton bags get this wonky aftertaste if I brew them too long and taste weak if I don't.

I'd like to know how important the freshness of the tea is? I'll bet some teas sitting on grocery store shelves is old, and teas sitting on shelves in specialty shops is even older... by far!

Go to a japanese or chinese supermarket in your area. Each town has one. They have some of the best teas at the cheapest prices.

OH RLY?

Mentor dominates the retail industry in northeastern Ohio, ranking 6th in the entire state in volume of retail sales. None of which is a "Japanese or Chinese supermarket".

I believe my fav brand is Ahmad's Earl Grey (I can't remember precisely, but it is an Arab company who imports it). Other good brands as well..I reccomend trying a few out. Some are stronger, some more flowery, some sweeter, etc.

Ahmad Tea of London or something, they make really good Earl Grey tea

The longer you brew tea the more of the bitter chemicals you extract so:

That's not at all true. This is only true of some types of tea, and especially of lesser teas. Monkey Picked Oolong, for example, does not get bitter the longer it's extracted. There's just a point at which the flavor levels off and that's it. Tung Ting Oolong does get noticeably more tannic/bitter the longer you extract.

It all depends on the tea.

Only brew tea for no more than three to four minutes for black teas, two to three minutes for the other types.

That depends on the temperature of the water and the type of tea. If you brew green for three minutes you are going to destroy it. 1-2 minutes at ~175F is best for most green teas. White tea generally requires longer than even black and sometimes showing its best around 8 minutes. Black tea at ~195F or so for about 3-4 minutes at the most.

Do not double brew tea.

Absolutely false. This is one of the great misconceptions about tea. You can and absolutely should double, triple, and maybe even quadruple brew a good tea, "fermented" types especially. You can get as much as 5 brews out of a good white, 3-4 out of a good black or Oolong, and 2-3 out of a green. More delicate varieties like Gyokuro green generally don't go beyond 2.
