I was in our shed.

Our shed is just a wood frame with plywood walls, concrete floor and a tin roof.

Yes, tin roof.

I was in there checking to see if my laptop was working OK (stored it in shed) after hanging up the cutters that my wife left out. It was raining and I didn't want them to rust.

Just then there was a big flash of light and all of the power went out in the shed. My hair stood up and I felt what would it would like to be zapped by a tazer in my leg just behind my knee (all at once of course. It was lightning.).

I dropped the laptop (it's a military issue GRiD pad so I'm sure it's OK) and fell to the floor.

I wasn't knocked out, but I couldn't move. I wasn't paralyzed. I think I was just scared sh!tless as to what had just happened. About 30 seconds went by and I was able to collect my thoughts. I was thinking of testing the theory of lightning striking the same place twice.

I heard my wife in the house yell asking me if I was OK. I got up and immediately ran into the house. Why run? I don't know. Maybe I thought I could out run lightning.

Begin Rant:

Just like when I'm sitting on my stool at work and getting ready to eat a sub sandwich from Publix and some customer feels the need to call and interupt me so he can ask if a T-Bird 1GHz will work on his Asus K7V, God has to interupt MY DAY with a freaking lightning bolt.

He scares the crap out of me and makes me drop my GRiD! It probably has a knick in the case now! Never mind the fact that it's still on as I type and the battery is probably going to die. Yeah. I could go get it and plug it back into the charger... as soon as I feel it's safe to go outside again! :Q

WOW! That musta sucked!

Hope you are ok, did you get checked out by a dr. I'm sure a few thousand volts of electricity and being paralyzed for 30 seconds isn't normal...:Q

Not to take anything away from you, but you didn't get "struck" by
lightning. If you had you wouldn've got back up, instead you'd be riding in the back of an ambulance with the smell of burnt hair
surrounding you.I work for the Fire Dept. and we had a run two days ago where the man had been "struck" by lightning, or so he thought!
Turns out the bolt hit next to him after striking his house.Yet even
the residual electricity was enough to knock him off his feet and
make him have to change his fundies.Your a lucky man that you didn't catch a full bolt, it'd been sad to lose a fellow anandtecher.
Now go get your laptop

Livin4Real: True. I KNOW I didn't take a direct hit! THAT would suck! :Q

The way the tin roof acted was freaky. The lightning hit the roof (the wife saw that) and then inside, it was like a whole bunch of little lightnings and one whacked my leg!

I'm just VERY happy that I was wearing my sneakers! It's funny. I'm almost always barefoot, even when it's wet out!

zippy: Actually, I'm fine now. A bit jumpy, but I'm sure it's mostly adrenaline. I checked where I got tazered and it's just a little red. Thanks, though!

if you would have held you laptop at just the right moment the lighting would have overclocked your cpu to 1thz (terahertz) and you would now have the fastest laptop in the world!

I wonder if your hair will all turn white, or some other interesting physical manifestation resulting from the experience.

Well, at least you can now say you have an "electric" personality. (bad joke)

My mom once told me a story about how she was playing a soccer game at her school; it was raining pretty good but the two teams kept on playing. Suddenly she saw a bright flash of light and the next thing she remembered was waking up on the ground. She later found out (by a couple of fans standing a ways back) that lightning had struck one of her teammates (stopping his heart, although the doctors managed to revive it), and apparently the bolt was so strong that it went straight through him and knocked out everybody on the field that was within 50 feet.

She also told me that the man struck can now easily tell when lightning is about to strike (nearby) because he can somehow feel the static building up.

Weird....

Don't you mean "Already fit Women" section? Buff women are scary... :Q

Thank goodness you are alright! The ways of tin... Maybe you should get that roof replaced to avoid this similar incident or get a lightning rod and ground the shed. Maybe lightning does strike twice in one spot. Glad to have you out of there.

Now if you may, open your eyes and mouth and look on my paper. My lightbulb has died and your "radiant self" would be perfect. It is no 60W light though but it is way bright enough.

Now, who would keep a laptop in the tool shed? I would understand attic or closet but shed? You must have alot of junk!

Again. Glad you are not a pile of smoke.

Living4Real,

One can indeed survive a direct lightning strike. A US sheriff got hit 10 times (if I remember well) during his life before the 11th killed him.

When I was about 14 I accidently stuck a pair of tweezers in an electric socket(long story). When I managed to get my mind clear, I was on the floor leaning up against the opposite wall. One prong of the tweezers was melted away and my hand stung for a while. The outlet was all coverd with black soot, but it still worked. Some people think thats what is wrong with me!!!
