Why isn't 3 pair an actual hand in poker? I have actually seen it an acceptable hand in a casino at a paigow table, but that's it. Seems to me it's not an easy hand to get and should rank higher than 2 pair. Anyone know the odds on a 3 pair hand, compared to say 3 of a kind?

you have 5 cards in your hand... how do you make 3 pairs?

There are variations to poker, like paigow. Some you have 2 cards, some you have 4 cards, some you have 7 cards, some have community cards, etc. Certain poker games, like paigow, could benefit to the additional hand. Some variations, like 3 card poker, already adjust the hands to the way the game is played, so you can get a straight flush with only 3 cards.

OP must be referring to 7 card stud variants where you form best 5 card hand possible.

EDIT: beaten by OP

I love Razz! It's so funny to see people come into a game of Razz assuming it is hi when it is actually lo. The smirk on their face when they flip over a full house is priceless.

Yes, but in every game I've played/seen you are still limited to a 5 card hand (hi-lo being two 5 card hands).

You are only limited because there is no hand you can make that takes more than 5 cards. It is actually a minor change to allow the use of a 6-card hand in a game that already uses 7 cards.

That makes no sense to me.

six of a kind
two trips
6 card straight

There are many hands you can make with 6 cards. Why "three pair" be the only exception?

wat. you could make a straight 6 cards long, or 7. Maybe you could have 6 diamonds. the possibilities are endless!

Long story short, the reason why they limit it to 5 card hands is because it limits the number of available hands that are possible to create. If you moved it to allow 6 or 7 cards for the hand you could have numerous additional possibilities for hands that would complicate the game of poker further.

All forms of real poker use 5 card hands pretty much. Only goofy games played by the house like paigou allow more.

Then you would have to do 6 card straight, 7 card straight, 6 card flush, 7 card flush, house with an extra pair. How do you work out the odds on all of that and keep tabs on what's what?
