And come on a bicycle.

Most likely the correct response in that situation, though personally I wouldn't have handed over the phone.

It's just a phone. Seriously, people have been murdered for less. It's not worth being stabbed or stomped over a phone. No need to escalate the situation by pulling a knife or making some kind of aggressive stance, especially if you are not confident in your abilities or the outcome (as I'm assuming most live in their parent's basement posters here on ATOT are).

If it was me, the kids probably wouldn't have even bothered me, but I am luckily to be tall and big. If you can't handle one-on-one (fighting a gang isn't like in the movies or a video-game), 5-on-1 is death trap. If 5 huge Samoans came up to me and demanded my phone, guess what, I've got a new excuse for a phone upgrade! Better than a face upgrade, with a slight limp for the rest of my life...

People here seem to be forgetting that "teenagers" encompasses people from 13-19 years old. And there are some damn big 19 year olds.

Seriously, lots of e-thugs on this board. I don't care how "hard" you think you are, 5 mostly grown guys will beat the shit of you, no question.

1. pre-dial 911 on said phone in your pocket

2. attempt to deescalate

3. if you are pretty sure that you cannot effectively defend yourself prepare to run after/while you dial 911.

4. post about it since then the story would be worth posting about.

1.5 Hope the police are going to be quick travelling from the USA to OZ

it works anywhere. Or at least I know that the Euro emergency number when dialed in the US forwards directly to 911.

Why is the possibility of getting an ass whooping protecting your property such a bad thing?

Most of the ones calling the OP a wimp are big, physical guys. Let's face it guys, those punks would not have started anything with you in the first place. Only a couple of confident heavy hitters with experience and a shank ready or a gun are going to try you on, and even then the common sense says look elsewhere. I'm somewhat of a monster and I've walked by situations like that where I got measured up and left alone. The OP did not have that presence.
I for one am glad he could come back here and post about it

I'm not calling the OP a wimp. I'm just pointing out that if he had not been tricked into handing over his cell phone, he'd still probably have it.

The way I see it, if the kids wanted to rob him blind, they would done so without asking, not pull some ruse to get only his cell phone. Did these teens even lay a hand on the OP, push him, or get physical in any way? Or was the mere threat of physicality enough to get the OP to hand over his phone?

Did OP even try and say "excuse me" when they blocked his path? The story, as told, sounds like the OP panicked and just handed over the goods, kinda like this scene from Harold and Kumar 2. Text

I only question the OP's actions up to the point of handing over the cell phone, but once he gave up his phone, everything that he did afterward is par for the course. You really can't pry your phone away from 5 dudes.

Seriously though, sorry about getting rolled... you probably did the right thing though... sometimes its a roll of the dice on how another course of action might have turned out... maybe nothing would have happened, or you could have gotten yourself in a situation worse than just giving up the phone... follow your gut feeling and hope for the best...

or stabbed...or pricked with a needle, then worrying for 6 months whether you have HIV or not...or spending months in hospital, traction, rehab, etc...

Unless you got Aflac...not worth it...

Its too bad the Aussy government has determined your right to defend yourself is not important. And people ask why I carry a .45 around with me 98% of the time - Because the police are there to take the report after you a mugged or worse, not protect you during the incident. Thank god the laws here in the United States are written so you don't HAVE to be a victim.

And no, I wouldn't have opened fire on them.. I'd have gone around or turned around and warned them that if they tried to stop me I am prepared to defend myself. To the OP, you did what you had to do to get out of the situation.. a phone isn't worth your life.. but if you had a way to defend yourself you could have at least made that determination yourself and not had it made for you.

But can anyone help me on the below:

The cops took down the IMEI number of the phone. Is there any way for them to catch the phone when it gets used again? I'm sure the robbers will change the sim but maybe the call signals transfer across the IMEI???

Why didn't the secret service protect you?

Anyways, it really depends on what age and size these teenagers were. Obviously if they were scrawny 13-year-olds, then I wouldn't give them anything. If they were all 17- to 19-year-olds, then it would be different. I think it would honestly depend on what mood I'm in and if I were tired. If I were tired and in a not-caring mood, then I could see myself just handing them the phone to not get into any trouble. If I weren't tired and in a ticked-off mood, then I might not and see what they would try to do.

this shit pisses me off. hate it happened but it's a phone. count your blessings. more than likely it was probably a bunch of punk ass kids(maybe young adults) with only strength in numbers and no gun, knife, etc. however, don't take a chance. give them what they want and get out of there.

glad you're ok.

I call shens because the Secret Service would never allow Barack to be robbed. Your profile says North Carolina and it should be The White House and yet you posted you live in Australia. And the clincher is................................. If you were the real Barack you would have been on a plane from Detroit where you gave a speech at a local community college to St Louis for the All Star when you were getting robbed. SO YOU ARE AN IMPOSTER

BTW did you file a police report?

I love the way people ASSume things here or do not read the entire thread/post then pass judgement. Epic fail on your part, you just owned yourself
