on september 11th, 2001, my wife, fiancee at the time, called me from her cell phone from downtown manhattan after she had just gotten out of the path station from the basement of the world trade center to tell me one of the towers had been hit by an airplane. a few minutes later when she arrived at work she told me that she had come up from the path station and that police officers were running up between the escalators yelling for everyone to get the fack out of there. she chose to take the closest exit onto varick st (northern end of world trade center plaza) and said that it looked like a war zone. there was debris on the ground that had apparently fallen off the tower that was struck, cars were stopped in random, unexpected positions and the streets were completely devoid of any humans.

as she was relating this story to me, i was at home getting ready for work, i saw on the news that a second plane had hit the other tower and it was then that she said "i have to go, they are evacuating us from the building".

i ran outside to one of the areas along the hudson river. our building was on the northern edge of hoboken, nj, right across the hudson river from about 33rd street. from this vantage i could see one of the most riveting and disturbing things in my life. there was a huge cloud of smoke billowing north over the entire island of manhattan originating from one of the towers. the tower was just literally spewing smoke.

and then it got worse. at first i thought that there was another explosion and that's why the smoke multiplied so much. when i realized what had actually happened i saw it; the scariest part of that day for me. i saw a huge cloud of dust and debris race northward and start to completely envelop all of manhattan and i came to the horrible realization:

oh my god, marlene is in there somewhere.

luckily for me the folks at her office had acted as soon as the second plane hit and she was well north of the dust cloud by the time the first tower fell. she told me later that as she raced northward, she passed many people just standing around watching and she thought to herself "i'm not going to stand around and get caught in anything in case those towers happen to fall this way". she managed to walk all the way to 30th and the west side where the ferries were getting people off the island. the sheer volume of walking wrecked her shoes and she made the bulk of her journey in bare feet. she was able to use a payphone to get in touch with her aunt in the bronx who was able to relay to my sister-in-law that she was ok. when the sister-in-law called me and gave me the good news i almost broke down crying. i must have been audibly shaken because she even asked me "are you ok?".

when i finally got a call that she was back in hoboken and heading back home i ran down washington st, the main street, until i met up with her around 8th street and held her for a long, long time.
