I don't think I personally witnessed anything significant, but I did see the Challenger explosion live on TV... we were watching it in school.

Where you in the building? My brother-in-law was, and his office was normally in the section that got hit; luckily for him, he'd been moved into a temporary office on the other side of the building while his area was being renovated. It took a few hours, but we heard from him later that morning that he was OK.
I was across the river in DC. I was supposed to be attending a meeting on the 8th floor of a federal building, but we just ended up clustered around the windows in the conference room, watching smoke billow out of the Pentagon. I walked by it later that day, when the government closed down and released everyone to go home.

I can only think of sporting events that I attended:
-Superbowl XXXVIII
-NBA Finals Game 2 last year Mavs vs Miami
-Summer Olympics 1996 - I was a couple of miles away from the Olympic Park bombing, although we didn't know about it until later
-Final Four in SA Alamodome (1998)

I remember sitting in my basement watching the Challenger launch ...

I remember sitting in the den of the hostel I was working in Wiltz, Luxembourg when the OJ trial verdict was handed down.

I remember when the Edmonton Oilers won their first Stanley Cup, and I spilled my orange pop all over the white couch

Sitting in my buddies house watching MJ hit the game winner against the Jazz in 1998.

Watching the Berlin Wall come down was hands down the most chill-inducing event I have ever watched on TV.

I was there when spaceship one first touched the edge of space, giving birth to commercial spaceflight.

Edit: Physically there, at the Mojave airfield. Good times.

...When the Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup

...When we salvaged an F-18 from the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm.

...When our sub caught fire when stalking a russian submarine.

You weren't there for any of them.

I was there when Mitch Hedberg played his last standup show in NYC.

My four friends (two are members here) were living like 2 blocks away from the Twin Towers on 9/11. One of them was actually inside when they were hit, but he got out.

It was 1986, I was 18 years old and watching the space shuttle Challenger launch in the morning.... I was really excited because Christa McAuliffe was on board, and as the daughter of an elementary school science teacher, it meant a lot to me to see....</end quote></div>

I have my problems with Reagan's politics but he was one hell of a speaker:
Reagan's speech after Challenger explosion.

Thank you for that, DangerAardvark. It was quite a sobering moment, and he handled it well. Especially addressing all the children who watched it... I was standing outside in the cold (for Florida) weather and my mom was in her classroom with her students watching it.

And duh, Duddy... I know it blew up. I could see it in the sky from my backyard!

I was there when... we landed on the moon...when Kennedy was shot...when we got out of Nam...when the shuttle exploded...when the berlin wall came down....when the prisioners were released by the Iatola...When challenger blew up on launch...when the towers came down and everyday after until they stopped televising it.

I have been around for a few years, I have been in Advertising, Retail, Teaching and I am still amazed at the way we treat each other and allow others to treat us. Trust me it was better back when we had respect for each other and the Government stayed out of peoples business. Yes things moved more slowly but more got accomplished and it was done right the first time.

Guys, seems to me that the thread is about actually BEING AT a historical event, not just being alive when it happened or watching the event on TV.

I was there when CDI imploded the Trojan nuclear tower -- Pic

I was there at the Kingdome on August 9, 1997 when Randy Johnson struck out 19 White Sox batters (including 3-in-a-row in the 9th inning in 10 pitches IIRC).

Since you did not originate this thread I don't think it is your call.....plus others have commented on watching things on Television so why are you up my butt?? You don't have to be at an event for it to impact you.....

...Bo Jackson nailed a line drive off of Nolan Ryan's nose for a double. Nolan kept pitching, even though he had to change jerseys between innings because of all the blood. (Sept 1991)

...Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire hit back to back home runs on consecutive pitches off of Kevin Appier in the top of the 1st inning against Kansas City. (June 1990)

...President and Mrs. Reagan boarded Air Force One at Ramstein AB following a European visit. (1986)

...wounded soldiers were transported to Landstuhl Army Hospital following the bombing of the barracks in Beirut. (1983)

I was not picking on you. Yours was just the last of many such posts.

The thread seems pretty useless if we all list off significant events that we saw on TV or were alive for. For example, unless anyone on ATOT is under the age of six, everyone was alive and probably watched part of 9/11 on TV. Such things do not make for an interesting thread. On the other hand, reading that someone was at the Pentagon or in the WTC makes for an interesting thread.

Also, I doubt the OP just wanted to know how old everyone was based on what occurred while they were alive.

Just my opinion.

Exactly. There were billions of people who were "there" in the "saw it on TV" sense for the moon landing, there were two who were "there" physically, and a few hundred in the control rooms. The first may be significant to all of our lives, but it doesn't necessarily merit a post.

I was 2 blocks away getting into a car with my parents when we heard the shots that killed JFK. At first we though it was a car back firing, until a couple of minutes later we heard on the car radio that the president had been shot
