I personally can't think of anything cool - which is a shame for my 21-year-old existence. What do you guys and girls have?

Not exactly noteworthy, but I was in Saigon and you could already hear the NVA tanks in the distance.
Listened on the UHF/VHF while some of the last Army Special Forces were retreating (WAYYYY behind the ARVN!).
BTW, they weren't voluntarily retreating either, they were under orders to "get your men and let's take 'em home", as one Colonel said.

It was 1986, I was 18 years old and watching the space shuttle Challenger launch in the morning.... I was really excited because Christa McAuliffe was on board, and as the daughter of an elementary school science teacher, it meant a lot to me to see....

a good friend of mine was the crew chief on the last US helicopter to leave Saigon in '75...(The Corps sent me home in '72, after Eastertide was over...)

Nice to not be the only old fck on a forum for a change...

oops...back on topic...

I was there when Richard Nixon officially opened Expo 74 in Spokane.

I was in Yankee Stadium the night Roger Maris hit #60 to tie Babe Ruth (9-26-61). Just a week before he hit his 62nd home run......

I was in Spokane when Mt. St. Helens went off...covering the Northwest (and parts of the country) with volcanic ash...The ash cloud was so big, and so dark, that birds nested for the night, and cows went to the milk barn...

I wasn't exactly right there, but at a different city further to the south in the '91 elections when Rajiv Gandhi, former Congress Prime Minister of India, was assasinated. I was on my uncle's campaign in the same election and was putting up posters with my cousins late in the night when a mob of Congress men bearing flaming torches ran towards us. The first guy to reach us asked us which party's poster we were putting up and when we told him we were with a different party, he told us to drop our posters and get out of there as the mob coming up behind him was armed and mad because they had just received word that Rajiv had been killed. We got out of there very quickly and when we returned the following morning, the entire street of several blocks was devastated. All the non-Congress campaign booths were burned to the ground and all the non-Congress posters torn or defaced.

It was a historically very significant event as it paved the way for the Congress to come back to power on the back of a sympathy wave and, in the absence of a Gandhi family member to run the government, P.V.Narasimha Rao became Prime Minister and nominated one Mr.Manmohan Singh as his Finance Minister. Manmohan Singh then instituted economic reforms in India by liberalizing the economy. Of course, arguably, Rajiv Gandhi could have won the elections alive and still liberalized India's economy. But having a non-Gandhi member running the country was a very important factor in India's political history. So, either way it was a very significant day for India and, possibly, for the world.

Ironically, now that Manmohan Singh is the Prime Minister, he has actually rolled back some proposed reforms. Strange country.
