Engineer goes home late because ****** always break and only the engineers know how it works and how to fix it.

Some of our recruiters work 10-12 hour days and then come in on weekends. Besides being on call to their hiring managers at any time of the day or night and responding to email on blackberries all the time.

I could be labeled a software engineer for the work I do. Let's see, I'm about to complete my 12th hour of work today and plan to work at least 2 or 3 more before I go to bed. Yeah, I'm definitely lazy.

Dammit, you guys complain when you work >10 hours a day. Most of us here (well, not in US ) work >12 hours a day. I'll take any IT job in US in a heartbeat!

Look at the hours they work in Europe, though.

But I agree, there's nothing more entertaining that watching cubicle warriors complain that they had to work 9 or 10 hours in a single day, and how tired and exhausted they are after that.

Too many people sidetracking you with their problems when there are people.

the reason that engineers work such long hours is to get the company out of the mess that Marketing, Sales, PMs got us into.....

that's a good way to put it! Today the CEO walks into a meeting of engineers and goes, okay guys we gotta get XXX feature working by Nov 1st because sales just sold a deal where they said it was already implemented :|

<---- Here's one that tops your notions!

12 hours a day again (M-F) and up to 12 on Saturday (8 usually)....and still getting behind....AGAIN!!!! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do get OT...which is nice!

Sad part...I'm so used to 12 hour days that they don't even seem long anymore!

When I worked as a mechanical engineer, typically worked 10 hour days and Saturdays...always too many projects and not enough staff, it never ended. Finally, I got fed up with it after 3 years and started working on another degree...got yelled at for not coming in after hours, 'cause I was busy at home working on homework or studying.

I've worked 18-20 hour shifts of physical labor and I can say it is akin to 9 solid hours in an office at times....so yeah...being a cube warrior is exhausting on a mental scale usually.

Software engineering isn't real engineering. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

in my own experience, project managers usually stay the latest. Engineers stay late because they actually have a product to deliver. Marketing, sales, etc come up with the idea and hand it off to them.

There is an engineering discipline called Software Engineering. However, most people that call themselves software engineers are really code monkeys.

Hell, had to bump this thread as I've worked 191 hours of overtime in the last 4 weeks, had 2 days off in the last 50 and worked 32 hours (all OT) the last two days. Go to work at 4:00am, leave around 6:30pm (or so)! Still so far behind that I can see my @ss!
