How much are you making off of that OT?

i'm a hardware engineer and work from ~6:30am to 6 or 7 on a bad day. The project i'm working on is being built right now, so i'm called in every 10 minutes and asked a question by a tech thats building it. That goes from like 7am to 4pm. If I want to get any work done, I have to stay extra.

I'm one of the rare ones that get paid 100% OT at time and a half. At this point, the money doesn't matter much as I'm working just too many hours. I'll have about 3,500 hours this year with a typical work year (8 hours a day) being 2,080 hours!

The current project that I'm working on is due tomorrow. I almost have the large machine finished with about a week of debugging to go. The second, smaller machine hasn't been started yet. The program (PLC ladder - programmable logic controller) is about 700 printed pages with about 100 screens on the touchscreen interface. That doesn't include the programs for the leak testing machines, engraving, networking and RS-232 routines to communicate with the rest. Nor does it include the robot programming (it does include robot handshaking).

As a graduate of a real Engineering Degree (MechEng) I can say that sitting in front of a keyboard writing code is not engineering in the true sense, thus I always snicker when people use the phrase "software engineering" in a failed attempt to sound important. What's next? Dishwashers calling themselves "Cutlery Maintenance Engineers"?

You do realize that "software engineering" is something other than sitting in front of a keyboard writing code, don't you?

Edit: Never mind, obviously you don't, so let me help you out. Software Engineering is to sitting in front of a computer writing code what Mechanical Engineering is to being a guy on the Ford assembly line. Perhaps not a perfect comparison, but close enough. Certainly close enough for a mechanical engineer

As to the topic here, I don't know if this ALWAYS applies to just the engineers, but it is true in almost every company that the people doing the real work are the ones who end up working long hours. Sales, marketing, managers, etc, usually can work long hours because the entire success of the company doesn't rest on their shoulders. Middle management is necessary, but things will go on if they aren't there. If the engineers just up and leave, NOTHING will get done.

If you are writing applications you are a Developer, not an Engineer. But yes, not everyone is a code monkey, thus some actually practice engineering principles - but far too many ppl are calling themselves "Engineers" who are really just developers, or "code monkeys". Its my opinion that software engineers are not from a true engineering dicipline. So there.

Pick one:
1. More work gets done once the useless people (i.e.-bosses & others that bother them all day with goofy questions, etc) go home
2. Workaholics that will stay until the job gets done (haven't learned that the inbox NEVER gets empty!!)
3. Maybe they know about stuff that goes on after hours that you WISH you knew about??
4. Because, like usual, engineers over-think EVERYTHING!!!
