I wonder why Engineers work long hours?

After doing software engineering then support/ps then back to engineering, I still don't get why engineers work 10 hour days. Marketing, Sales, PMs all go home at 5.

Is it because engineers are lazy and don't start 'working' until after 2? Or perhaps they're stubborn and if someone gives them a problem to do they'll stay until it's solved. (I know I don't like to admit defeat!)

I actually get most of my work done after the masses leave the office. A few of us always stay late and that is when I seem to have the time to get a lot done.

Most people I know leave when their 8 or 9 hours are up unless there's a project that MUST be done.

b/c in engineering, it's typically endless OT at 1.5/2.0 pay.

My company works Mon-Thur 7-5:30
Then most everybody works friday and sometimes 12 hr days. Works out to about 55hr wks.

Ha! Try the auto industry. I rarely see an engineer or sales person after 4:30 and NEVER see them in on the weekend.

I can tell you in aerospace that is not typical at all. Unless you're a contractor, you'd be lucky to get straight pay for OT.
