my car won't let you lock the doors if the keys are inside. (i mean, if you leave them inside and try to lock it from the outside).

nissan ftw.

So your car knows if you left your keys on the seat, the floor, etc. and not in the ignition lock?

Yes. Infiniti here. I have keyless start so I never have to take keys out of my pocket. Even if I did, car will not lock if keys are inside the car (including trunk)...very nice feature. (Tried to lock the car once when it was new and it wouldnt lock...took ~5 min to figure out that I had forgotten keys in the car lol)

what he said.

So if you are driving through the bad part of town and someone decides to carjack you they just open the car door and kill you, because your doors won't lock?

no, they lock, if you are inside the car with the keyfob or outside the car with the fob, but lets say you leave the fob in the car and then try to lock the car from the outside, it won't lock. there's a button on the handle and if you press it and the key is inside then it'll just beep at you.

Locks only keep honest people honest. Of course lock them!

(and keep a key in your wallet, I learned after a 4 hour wait for a tow truck.)

Don't forget to roll the windows up, too.

Man, I wish my truck did this. It's the opposite! I've had it lock the doors on it's own with the keys in the ignition.

Nice. What if you leave the sunroof wide open, leave the car and lock all the doors, then reach inside from the sunroof and hit the sunroof close button and quickly drop the keys inside before the sunroof completely closes?

I was just at the grocery store this evening and I realized halfway through that I had left my keys in my car, for the third time in two weeks. Huzzah! I tried calling my housemate who had helped me in the past and another friend I have here (I'm new to the area) and neither one picked up. I returned the frozen items I had in the car and just waited for a return call, cruising the grocery store for an hour or so. Eventually I went back out and took another look around, when I saw that I had uncharacteristically left my sunroof cracked because it was the first hot day of the summer (here in NY state). I went back into the grocery store, borrowed a broomstick and poked the door unlock button. Presto! I'm in business. Definitely an answer to the prayer I had prayed 3 minutes prior. It was only cracked 1.5" or so, and on top of a tall SUV(Montero) so I didn't think twice about it being a theft risk- but I was able to gain access in about 15 seconds and I didn't have to stand on top of a box or anything. I don't think I'll crack my sunroof anymore.

Try Rain Guard window shields, they're curved to fit along the window, and hang down about 1.5" or so. You can keep your windows open a crack to let air in, but nobody can get in, except maybe with a wire coat hanger. Also means you can have the windows open and (as the name suggests) you won't have an issue with water.

I've had to call pop-a-lock before. It took them all of 15 seconds with a peice of plastic with a rubberband on the end to open my vehicle.

$40 later I decided it's best to either keep a spare on me or buy that plastic tool and hide it in the undercarriage somewhere.
