How about the Destiny games? AFAIK you can explore various planets and moons in our system.

I didn't consider Destiny 1 because it's not available on PC.

I never played Destiny 2 which is on PC, but doing some research it does look like it explores the solar system, but the game is "Online Only"..... I think that matters.

Also infinite warfare came out before Destiny 2, I think that matters too.

I mean "authentic" as in there was actual effort to portray the solar system how it's supposed to look...

I never played no man's sky but looking at gameplay on YouTube it looks like the planets are randomly generated.

There's a calculable average composition of a given solar system given starting conditions and star type. 'Average' overall however is meaningless here, as it would provide an 'average' solar system for too variable of starting conditions which would be inaccurate.

Essentially, an accurate portrayal of a solar system is nonsensical since any given portrayal is going to be accurate somewhere.

Also, if you are into classics, I recommend the Starcraft series. Though certainly not a FPS, it has a great story. It actually takes place far from Earth, though in Broodwar there is a new faction of Terrans that just came from Earth with a a fleet, the UED. Also all the other Terrans are pretty much descendants of colonists from Earth originally.

Also, if you want to enjoy the story from the beginning, but in a more modern way, you can load a mod for Starcraft 2 called Mass Recall, which has the Starcraft and Brood War story campaigns in Starcraft 2 with modern graphics and features. In any case, both Starcraft/Broodwar and Starcraft 2 are F2P, though only the first campaign in Starcraft 2 is free.

This depend on what version of Doom you are talking about. In classic Doom, you play on Phobos and then Deimos, the moons of Mars, and then end up fighting in Hell. Doom 2 takes place on Earth, as well as in Hell. Doom 3 is primarily on mars, yes, though also in Hell.

Now, if you look into Final Doom, I believe the story of TNT is based on the moons of Jupiter, while Plutonia is based on Earth? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Doom

Now, with the new DOOM reboot, that takes place primarily on Mars. And then there is DOOM eternal, which is all over.

Nobody makes games like that cause it's irrelevant to the game. It adds a huge amount of work for zero pay off. It doesn't make the game more fun, and it doesn't add realism, when the player's focus is 100m in front of them. There's only a couple planets that can even support human life(when geared up). The rest would be decorative bullshit.

It's a stupid idea, and you should feel bad. If you want astronomy, buy astronomy software. If you want a game, buy a fun game. Technical accuracy is usually negative fun. The USS Enterprise would've *just* left the solar system if it were technically accurate. That's a lame fucking 'star trek'.


Captains log, Stardate -360226.90: We're 18,262 days into our journey, and aside from a couple nice planet views and some trace amounts of dust, we've found nothing. I fear our mission to find new life is fruitless. The next star system is 70,000 years away, and I can only hope our decendents find something interesting that'll make this journey worthwhile.

OP, maybe if you reframed it from thinking of it as teaching you astronomy and such, and instead approached it from the perspective of learning about cinematography and special effects, you could consider it educational.

Or be a lesson in hubris, or how the few people that tend to get the biggest rewards for making amazing things, often really had limited hand in what made those things amazing or actually probably were a detriment to them being amazing. Or how to expose grown men for manbabies ("George Lucas raped my childhood"; also Lucas himself where he clearly is a doofus, but manages to surround himself with talented people that can see the potential of a vision, but he then became a manbaby that wanted to see his vision of perfect Star Wars which was shittier, often times absurdly laughably so). And how success often convinces people that they earned it and thus are genius. Or how people are afraid to tell someone rich and powerful no, or that they have bad ideas (see the making of Episode 1), aka cult of personality type of stuff.

Oh, and own the toy rights in the 80s. Or, how to turn your manbabyness into success by making videos bitching about movies that are longer than the movie you're bitching about (RedLetterMedia).

Certainly there's plenty of other aspects you could learn. I think most people by now know that Star Wars is fantasy and not really sci-fi.
