I would like to move a server from one SAN to another SAN..

The operating system (Server '08 R2) and it's data drive are housed on our old SAN in a RAID 10 array. I would like to move it to our new SAN so that I can completely rebuild the array on our old SAN.

I would just totally blow it away if it wasn't a big deal, but the OS partition on this blade houses vCenter Server. I'm not yet comfortable enough reconstructing our cluster on a new server and what the implications are for destroying our current vCenter Server.

Would a logical solution be to do a full backup using the Windows Server Backup tool, back it up to a network share, and then restore it to a volume on my new SAN?

can you do replication between the SANs? do you not already have some sort of backup of this that is running that you can use anyway?

It does not appear that this server is being backed up. This is an environment that I inherited with very little knowledge of how it was working, so I'm having to figure things out as I go. The VMs are being backed up by VEEAM, but it doesn't appear that the blades themselves are being backed up.

I called HP enterprise support and they said that I cannot transfer a volume on one SAN to another SAN. I thought there would have been a way and she just didn't know what she was talking about, but her suggestion was to use the backup/restore method that we have in place... which there isn't one, currently.

Has anyone had any luck with the Windows Server full backup / restore on versions 2008 R2 and later?

I don't know how complex your vSphere environment is, but I just want to throw out 2 options that may make your life easier than trying Windows Server Backup (though you can always just give that a shot first).

1) Build a new virtual vCenter. Don't even bother worrying about SQL db unless you need the performance history. It's been a while, but I think the only things you lose are alert settings and possibly host profiles, but there may be a way to migrate those as well (though it might be just as easy to document the existing ones).

2) P2V the vCenter server into your existing vSphere.

Is the machine virtual? If so just migrate it via storage vmotion or shut it down and connect right to the host and migrate it.
